DirtyComanche
Yup. And you'll need a longer brake line/shocks to make everything work. You might want to have shock mounts welded to the axle too, as the stock ones are on the spring plate (plate that holds the spring pack to the spring perch) and are really useless after you go SOA. Pretty straight-foreward. Unless I'm forgetting things. (It's been a long time since my truck was stock). There's the brake porportioning valve to deal with too. It's umm, annoying. sinnaevd
no this is probably a whole hell of a lot more difficult of a question then what I'm about to ask, but... How (as in what stages first) should I build my rig and why?? ( i went over the basic "ideas" a little further up in here sum where)
87manche
I built my rig in this order. Tow points-Definitly the first priority. Armor-Min'es long wheelbase, my breakover sucks, and my rockers and t-case were vulnerable Lift and axleswap were done at the same time. Axleswap was for lower gears. If I hadn't scored new axles I would have lifted and then regeared. Locker went in the new axles. Detroit carrier I saw tow points and armor as the primary needs on my rig. You can have a lot of fun wheeling stock, but tow points are a must, and it's nice not to worry about a rock going into the t-case
sinnaevd
What about my conversion to 4x4, and my conversion to auto, and upgrading the trans case if i have to and all that junk??? should it all be done first?
pingpong
WOW... I thought it was 4wd  First thing first.. why are you converting this to an automatic.. this is a pretty hard swap in the terms of needing lots of parts, and understanding the factory wiring schemes. Personally I would keep the stick, but upgrade to a better tranny. When you do the 4x conversion that is when I would installl the lift since the front axle will be coming out anyways. As for the rear... it is no harder to swap in a 8.8 then it is to swap in a XJd44. as a matter of fact it i9s the same amount of work. The way I built my rig was started off with a Budget boost, then cut away enough sheetmetal to clear 33's  Then I ran across a killer deal on a used RE DB setup. Ran that for a yr, but in that time I installed a SYE, front locker, changed 3 rear axles, and 2 front. Then I went Long arms :chillin: Then I went to a place called Crozet and almosted rolled several times, and decided to take my build another direction, and you see where my rig is at now. Future plans include another axle swap, and t-case upgrade, as well as changing my suspension again  So it is all a learning process. Some ppl wouldn't spend the kinda monay I did on my rig, but It gets er done :brows:
sinnaevd
i want auto because when I took my friends XJ offroading there was a lot of..i dunno how to describe it, but you could fell it chugging back and forth, you could really feel the clutch working/slipping. i found it very uncomfortable. plus my gf can't drive stick, and she would like to drive if we went. I can get my hands on a couple auto MJ's. so i'm guessing that would make the swap a lot easier?
DirtyComanche
Ever thought of teaching her to drive stick? I know it may seem like an odd concept to have a girl who knows how to use a clutch, but it's worth it in the end.
sinnaevd
i have tried many of time with y firefly, and her dad has tried many of time swith his YJ. she gets too nervous when she is in commotion, and on the trails i think would be a NIGHTMARE. she couldn't do the silver lake sand dunes in michigan, and she was simply driving over a 3 foot hill in sand with no one with her in 4 low...lol definately would should switch to auto i think...or is it just an unbelievable nightmare of a mess? pingpong
its a lot of work to do the conversion.. to be honest with you, you would be better off finding an auto equipped rig
sinnaevd
it might be better in my travels i think to find a new one n e way and use the now 2 i have to use as parts donors....the box on this one is almost unsalvagable. the panels available would be enough to fix it, but why seeing as how i'm only going to bash the hell out of it n e way... An auto floor shift is extremely diffcult to find in my area, not to mention finding an MJ period. fighting he same issues with salt as some of the other people out there, so I know some body work will be needed, but i'm not sure I want to tackle another body project suck as the one I am facing with the charger. But on the flip side, I bought this MJ for 50 bucks so I'm not really out n e thing, and it came with a ton of spare body parts. the box is the only thing that is my concern.
