AX-5 to Engine Housing Bolt Lengths - anyone got em?

  1. 1. When you pull things apart do you:

    • Mark each bolt for exact replacement each time, or write down where stuff goes?
      1
    • Lay the bolts out in order and hope you don't knock the tray over?
      2
    • Just try to pay attention and remember where everything goes?
      2
    • Drop it all in a pile for later?
      1
    • Pay a mechanic whenever more than 2 bolts are removed?

Well I went to figure out which bolts go where for putting the tranny back and I seem to be a few bolts short. I usually at least try to pay attention, but this time I just dropped the bolts in on the floor as each one came out. Reckoned I'd figure it all out later...

Well now it's later and the bad news is I have 8 holes and only 5 bolts. One of those is the lower stud, so I seem to be missing 2 bolts which makes the puzzle a little harder than I'd've thunk.

:wall:

So, anyone tech-head-packrats out there have a little diagram or the measurements and locations for the 8 bolts between a an AX-4/5 and the 2.5L?

Thanks!

Jeremiah

hehe....I feel your pain. I did the exact same thing the first time I pulled my AX5  That was a hard lesson learned. What I do now is take a large piece of cardboard and as I pull out a bolt, punch it thru the cardboard in the pattern where it came from. Makes install quick and easy. (I know it's not any help to you now, but...... ;) )

You should have 5 large bolts total (2 larger than the others and one of them has a nut also), plus 2 small bolt/nut sets, and one large nut. Here’s a pic of the rear of the engine showing the bolt locations. I do know that the two largest bolts go in the top two spots, and the other ones go in the spots around the side, one at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, and the last one with the nut goes at 7 o'clock. The lower left hole is a bolt and nut combo, and the lower right one is just a nut that attaches to that rod attached to the side of the engine. The two small (3/8” I recall) bolt/nuts hold the dust shield in place (don’t forget to put it in place before you mate the tranny to the engine…..it’s a PITA to get in there if you forget it (ask me how I know). Those go in at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.

I’ve got some extra bellhousing bolts in my parts pile should you need any, just let me know.

Have fun!

Jeff

Edit: also, the bolt at 10:00 holds a clip for the CPS wire, and the one at 2:00 holds a clip for the wiring harness that goes to the back of the tranny on that side. Don’t forget to put those back in, otherwise you’ll have both harnesses laying on the bellhousing/engine and they’ll probably eventually wear/melt thru and cause problems.

I'm going from memory (I've had my tranny in/out 4 times so far...don't ask why), but I'm pretty sure on all that. There may be one additional bellhousing bolt above the starter area, tho, now that I think about it some more.

It's in. I put the bolts through the housing to make sure the length of exposed threads was consistent and then punched them through the bottom of an old kleenex box in order (a la the cardboard suggestion).

Lining up the input shaft by yourself is a total :headpop: itch.

Good deal

If you ever have to do it again, get a couple extra bell bolts and cut the heads off of them, screw them into the engine loosely, and use them as guide pins...makes reinstallation and lining up the input alot easier (especailly if you're working by yourself and don't have a tranny jack  ). Or better yet, replace the bolts with studs/nuts permanently.
