PRLJEEP
I found about ten D35's with a 3.55 ratio in Mansfield, OH in a bone yard for $100. They vary in age from say 1985 to 2000 and all out of XJ's. Most with the 9 inch brake, but some are 10 inches. Most w/o ABS, some with. Are any years better than others? 9 vs 10 inch brakes, does it really matter? Can I but an ABS axle on a non-abs car??? TIA- PRL MugBog in Wayne, OH- Saturday 5/27/06. No one made it through last time!!!
Bounty Hunter
I found about ten D35's with a 3.55 ratio in Mansfield, OH in a bone yard for $100. $10 an axle, I'd jump on it ;) I prefer the pre'91 non c-clip D35 over all others.
Eagle
The ones with 9" brakes are newer, and are the c-clip variety. The older AMC-vintage have the 10" brakes and are not c-clip. Personally, I prefer the older ones, both because I don't like the c-clip design and because I think the 10" brakes work better (even though they are 10x1.75, not 10x2.5 like on the Dana 44s). Yes, you can use an ABS axle in a non-ABS vehicle.
JOMJ87
Hey man I know I'm new to this site but i have had my Comanche for around 4 years and have researched the same question and in my and alot of others opinions the flange design ( non c-clip) i feel are better for a few reasons. If you offroad alot and on rough terrian you will most likely brake a rear axle shaft, the c-clip design will brake and try to remove itself from the axle tube. This will cause great damage with you brake and anything else that gets in the way. As far as the flange design the are held on at the ends of the axle tube behind the brakes so in turn will not slip out if they brake. One more reason is that with the c-clip you have to open the Diff to take them out and the flage you do not which makes it easier on the trails. just my little $.02 on this.
