I just finished sorting out my reverse lights, my parking lights, etc., so that I could take my Cheif in for freaking PA inspection. I get to my mechanic's place, get out of the truck and my wife tells me my tail lights don't work! What the heck!???? I was so irritated. I have spent so many hours on those dang lights. What could be the problem now? I just hate the idea of paying him by the hour to find the problem when I could be doing the same thing, and saving $60/hr instead of spending it.

No name yet....but it's coming... (Edit: The Cheif)
ChiefJosh replied to ChiefJosh's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Thanks guys! It's coming along. I might end up just calling it "The Cheif", to distinguish it from my 98 XJ, which has always been called "The Jeep". I'll put up a few more pics soon. I'm thinking about repainting it this spring, I'm not sure what color yet. Maybe black. Should I keep the "Comanche Cheif" lettering? What color was it on black trucks? -
Yeah I called about one a little while back that was a '91, 4x4, with about 130k, and in descent/nice shape. The guy I talked to told me they wanted like $5500 for it. I asked him if he was kidding. He said no - these trucks are collectors items  , and worth a lot of money. He told me to check ebay- that is where they get their pricing from, after I told him that KBB said it should be about $2800. I laughed at him, he gave the phone to his manager, and she told me they would go as low as $4500. I laughed at her and hung up the phone.

Well, I finally got it. Turns out, after fiddling with the fuse box for another hour, that the connectors that hold the fuse in were a bit loose and corroded. I had it in reverse while in the garage, with the key on, just to see if they ever lit up. I bolted the fuse box back in place and crawled back out from under the dash ready to throw in the towel and I looked back and the freakin' lights were on! I threw up my hands, tightened the fuse and left. Glad I got that one ironed out.

who knows how to fix interior lights?
ChiefJosh replied to sinnaevd's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mine were working last week, and now I've got nothing. No courtesy lamps, no lamps overhead, nothing. My gauge cluster still lights up and the fuses are good. Any ideas? -
Alright, I've got some updates: My switch checks out okay, continuity-wise; though I had a tough time checking voltage on it, most of the stuff around it is rusty, but there is power there. I checked power at the rear harness, but I've got nothing. What is in between? Anything? What else could be wrong?
-
Yes, there is a "back up lamp" switch on the drivers side of the tranny, I think it's a 7/8" hex head, and that's about all it is. If you have a multimeter, you can check to see if the switch is good by throwing it in reverse (engine off of course), and check it on the continuity setting. It should read continuous if the switch is good, if it's not, replace it. That would keep you from getting power to the rear harness at all.
-
Yeah, it's actually a 7.5 amp fuse, I've tried that, still nothing. Any other ideas?

Does anyone here have any experience troubleshooting non-existent reverse lights for a BA-10? I have some power to the switch and the switch seems to be okay, at least it tests okay for continuity. Where or what else can I check? (Note, I did check the bulbs, they are good.)

All I can tell you is what I've got, but is almost 20 years old, so who knows if somebody else changed anything. It's a shortbed with a 4.0, D35 rear, 5spd - BA10 I think. It's got A/C, though when I bought it, it came with all of the gauges except the tach. Vinyl interior, bucket seats, no power anything. Anybody else help me with this one? -

I'm honestly not too sure about the lift, I think its in the 4" range, it looks a bit taller than 3. I love the look of the tires too, I'm not sure yet how well they will stuff, if they will at all, but we'll see. I may have to trim some, but I'm going to do the 97+ header panel and TJ flares sometime this spring, so if I trim, I'll trim then. -
Well, it's been almost a month since I paid $350 for my truck that wouldn't start and didn't drive.Image Not FoundSince then, I towed it to the back parking lot of my apartment complex. Thankfully we've had an unusually warm winter thus far and I've been able to do all of the work I've needed to without a garage. I replaced the CPS(so it would run) and replaced the spider gears in my D-turdy5 (so it would drive). I replaced the front and repainted both bumpers, remounted the brushguard so the headlights would shine on the road, and covered the primer:Image Not Found My best mod yet: almost brand new 31" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws on some Mickey Thompson Classic II's for $300!! I've got big plans, but one thing at a time and inspection is first.

Stupid ? - How do I get the spare tire down?
ChiefJosh replied to ChiefJosh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Nevermind- I got it! Surprisingly, it wasn't stuck at all, it just dropped right down. I did take the opportunity to lube everything up. Thanks for the help- -

Okay, cool, I see what you're talking about. I see the hole, the shaft and the cotter pin thing. I don't have the OE jack and jack handle, but I do have the one that came with my 98 XJ, the foldable long handled bent piece of 5/16 steel. Will that work? -
Yeah, the header can be found here: http://www.autopn.com/store/pc/viewPrd. ... duct=20009 I put one in my 98 XJ, no complaints, definately better than stock. I've never tried any other header so I have no comparison, but I like it.

Interior and dash lights, parking brake release
ChiefJosh replied to ChiefJosh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for pointing out the fuse, I'll check that. Secondly, now that you mention it, my parking lamps aren't working either, I'll check that out. If the rain ever slows down. Ahhh, another downside to not owning a garage..... -
I don't have any lights lighting up on the inside of the truck when the headlights are on. The dash lights seem to work, as the blinker lights come on, and the shift indicator and 4wd indicator work, but there is no backlighting to the dash or any of the overhead lights. I replaced the headlight switch and the lights in the instrument panel are good, any other ideas? I'm also looking for a parking brake release pull and cable, new or used. I ordered one off of www.partsamerica.com, but aparently it is out of stock. This is one item that doesn't swap over from a Cherokee. Anybody have any luck swaping the whole lever in from an XJ? Which would be easier, finding a release or switching setups? I need to get both of these things ironed out in order to pass PA inspection by the end of the month. Thanks ahead of time...

Where to find new OEM parts?
ChiefJosh replied to ChiefJosh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Couldn't sleep, so I figured I check up on this. Thanks for your help, that partsamerica site is helpful. The parking brake cable I need I guess is the release cable and t-handle, so that was just what I needed. The headlight plugs I'm gonna need are the ones that disconnect the entire headlight harness so you can remove the whole header panel with lights intact. As for the vent/wing window seals, will the seals from a window that doesn't open work on mine, which does open? -
I've got an '88 4.0 SWB and I need to pick up some OEM parts, such as parking brake cable and pull, seals for my vent windows, a new headlight harness plug, etc, etc. Where can I find such things? One place I found was www.teamcherokee.com, but they didn't have much of what I needed. Anybody know of any place else that sells this stuff, or I am I headed to the stealership? Thanks- JOSH

For anyone with a 97+ front clip????
ChiefJosh replied to JohnQ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a piggyback question for this thread, okay, maybe I am hyjacking it a bit, but is on the same thought line. I want to switch over to the 97+ front clip, but at the same time I'll probably switch over to TJ flares. If I'm doing both, do I need a 97+ bumper and brackets or can I make due with my current bumper b/c I'm not using end caps anyway? Has anybody made the TJ turn signals functional? How'd you go about it? -
Is the herculiner or whatever much louder than having carpet?
