  1. Sorry for the slow reply. The crankshaft is secure and does not move at all, axially. I don't believe the thrust bearing is to blame. I'm thinking the motor and transmission mounts are trash. I'm not going to bother replacing the pukey mount, but I will replace the MM's. I'll post an update next week. Edit: Thanks for the help, all. No opinions are unwanted here!
  2. Use a Dremel with a coarse bit and grind that sucker out. If you're more adventurous, you could always use a blowtorch to heat up the surrounding metal. The expansion of the crankshaft should cause the spacer to fall right out.
  3. I was hearing a loud screeching noise every time I depressed my clutch pedal. Thinking it was my TOB, I replaced it and threw it back together only to find that it was still a screechy mess. So I decided to replace my pilot bearing, which was jammed so tightly in my crankshaft that I had to resort to using a dremel to grind the thing out. Alas, no respite from the banshee screech. So after tearing apart my drivetrain and putting it back together twice in one weekend, I realized the noise coming from me disengaging the clutch was caused by the engine side of the flywheel grinding up against the dust cover. I apologize for the terrible picture quality, but the scoring goes almost halfway around the plate and the flywheel had carved a crevice almost 2 millimeters deep in some spots. I tried bending the plate, which didn't make any meaningful difference. I "solved" the problem by slapping a couple of thick washers as spacers on the bolts at the bottom of the bellhousing, but I'm worried this may be a symptom of a larger problem. Does anyone have any advice to offer? I think my motor mounts may have failed and threw my alignment out of whack.
  4. Urgent update: I just replaced the TOB and the screeching noise hasn't gone away. I really want to break something. What did I miss?
  5. I was planning on doing a full AX-15 swap this summer and was hoping that the POS that I bought would be enough to limp back home in May. Obviously, I was wrong. I should have known, the instructions were in Chinese... As much as I don't like getting crappy parts, the internal slave/TOB assembly is so ridiculous that I can't justify spending more money than I have to on it. Edit: This time I bought a Dorman. Any info on how well they do?
  6. I thought 80-110 seemed a bit low. 8-10 hours at New England labor pricing sounds like a considerable dent in my wallet.
  7. I drive an 88 4x4 long bed w/ pukey tran. I bought an exedy clutch kit 5 months ago and the slave cylinder/TOB already crapped out on me. I'm strapped for time and I would like to avoid dropping my transmission without proper tools again, considering how miserable that experience was. Does anyone know what labor would cost for the replacement? I already have the part and have gotten online labor quotes at around $80-110. Does this seem accurate? Thanks for the help.
  8. Within the last 30 seconds of my last drive, my comanche started making this horrible high-pitched squealing noise. This noise only occurs when I depress the clutch pedal / disengage the clutch. The noise persists for as long as the engine is on and the pedal is depressed. I think I may have also lost some clutch pressure but cannot tell for sure. I think it may have been some small particle finding its way in between the clutch and the flywheel, as it sounds a bit like grinding. Most of the other research I've done points to the possibility of it being a bad throwout bearing, but I sincerely hope that is not the case as I just replaced the internal slave cylinder / throwout bearing assembly less than 6 months ago. Thanks for the help Edit: Transmission is a pukey.
  9. I just had this problem last month in my 88. Internal slave/ Pukey 5 spd. What actually caused the sticking and eventual failure for me was the spring in the master cylinder breaking in two. I did a full slave/master replacement and solved the problem, as the slave was definitely on its way out as well.
  10. Here, I tried to show on this picture where exactly the weld failed. Credit to Matthew Currie from the naxja forum for the original photo.
  11. Soo... I must have the worst karma ever. :wall: Just a month after a full slave / master replacement, my actual clutch pedal failed. I'm sorry I don't have pics, but the weld failed right up at the pivot point the first time I depressed the pedal this morning. Does anyone know if this is weldable, or even should be welded? Should I be buying a replacement pedal assembly instead? Thanks in advance for the help.
  12. I had just noticed this! Glad someone else caught it too
  13. The tube is between two or 3 feet long and I remember seeing the top of it poke out near the washer fluid tank. I've finished the clutch replacement, and I will check it tonight and get back to you on whether I find the hole. Thanks for all the help! :wrench:
  14. There is not, but I cannot find a hole either. I don't doubt at all that that is what this is now, after having done more research... I'll have to do a more thorough search for that hole tomorrow morning.
  15. The transfer case breather on mine is a tube with a hose clamp on it. It runs alongside the transmission breather and they both end in 90 degree metal fittings. I swear, this one is giving me quite a tough time :hmm:
