So I just moved to Corpus Christi Texas and am worried about the salt water destroying my baby. Any ideas to prevent this? Other then running all the way back to Kansas! Thanks in advance!

So I was driving along one day, everything is fine.... heard a loud clunk noise from the rear and it felt like someone hit me, so I pulled over and there was nobody around. So I get out and check it all over and see nothing. I get back in the truck and go. not even hardly moving I get this clunk, clunk, clunk, consistant with speed. so I get out again, look it over and nothing again. I drive about 5mph to get it back to the shop I work at and by the time I could see the garage doors I hear another louder clunk and then all is fine. We get it on a lift and check it all out up in the air and nothing! all is normal. So a month or so goes by and I move all the way to Texas. Thats about 800+ miles from home. The truck gets put on a car dolly and pulled behind the Budget truck. Therefor the rear driveshaft was disconnected. Well, I got the driveshaft all hooked back up again today and drove around the block and sure enough, clunk clunk clunk, same as before. I have had all fluid in both diffs changed and the tranny and transfer case fluids changed. Could it be that u-joint? Maybe the driveshaft actually slipping inside the transfer case?????? I sure as heck hope not!!!!!!!! :help: :help: :help:

Oh and I believe the belt I put on was the middle of the road belt that Autozone has. Duralast Gold I think. It wasnt the Dayco, but it wasnt the crap low end belt either. Didn't want to spend to much in case it broke, but didn't want to buy cheap either. It was around 30 bucks.
-
Nope. Didn't end up replacing any pulleys. My other truck did the same thing. This is the first time I changed the belt on this one, but when I got her it was missing the inside rib. I think it was just whoever put it on didn't get the power steering pulley pulled tight enough. Or they pulled it tight at an angle and it pulled the rib off. Its been a few days and ive kept my eye on it, and (knock on wood) so far its holding up like it should. I will of course pop the hood at least once a day to check.

No new pictures, but I finally got the new belt on. Belts are a pain in the  on theses things. My power steering pulley wasnt getting tight enough (Thats the tensioner of course) so it would slip the belt off and then strip the last rib off the belt. Got all that taken care of and now all the gauges and everything are reading normally and theres no sound from the belt! Its amazaing how much trouble a loose belt causes. My oil pressure use to read really low and the battery was really low and all that, but new belt and bam! its all normal. :clapping: Next time I do something major I will post new pics, I promise!

Trans fluid smell in cab
starkizer replied to starkizer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Have been busy moving... I will get pics as soon as I can. Smell went away for awhile but now its back. and that cover thing I put on kicks me out of reverse now so thats no good! -
So I assume its just a vent tube that connects to the front differential. Its just a rubber hose that has a white plastic end part on it. Well, anyway, its hanging down and draging all over town. I am sure its just a vent, but is it supposed to go someplace? Connect to something? Strap to something out of the way so it doesnt drag? Any thoughts? A quick search on google had a cherokee that it went into the air filter box but I have had two MJs now and neither one of them had it connected to the air filter.... well, I guess the other one was 2 wheel drive so it would'nt of even had a front Diff....... Hummmmmm :dunno:

in or around 92 they changed the body style a little bit to the squared off look, so don't get anything before 91 or it will be for the round-er look. the other guy has the years right, and it is a header panel. So all in all, the other guy had it. Just wanted to throw that bit in there about the body style! :D
-
I have replaced them on two different MJs now. They have a really funky metal clip that holds them on.... ok actually like 4 or 5 along the row. If just that thing is rusted, pull it off and toss it out. Do a ebay search and replace it. If the track that holds it on is rusted, I don't know. Depends on how bad I guess, if you can sand it or not. But, yes, they are held on by really dumb holder things that will most likely break and give you head aches getting back on. I had my pass side on real nice till it flew off down the highway, God Bless parts trucks! Best advice, get a good rubber mallet and beat the hell out of it.... just don't bend the thing, they are cheap! Good Luck!

Trans fluid smell in cab
starkizer replied to starkizer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Should specify its a standard. Not automatic. 5 speed. I pulled everything out today and cleaned it really well. I also pulled the cover thing off my parts truck which is completely different and not there at all on my working truck. Well it is now. A technician buddy of mine described it as blow back. I have pics I will post as soon as possible. -
weird power problem..... (I know, crazy right)
starkizer replied to starkizer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Went to take off the negative cable, all the insulation crumbled! Had a good two inches of completely exposed copper wire. Took forever to get that bolt off to change it out. Then another forever to take the nut off the stud that was supposed to stay in the motor! I bet this solves a lot of issues though. Thanks all. Will post if it still does it. -
weird sound nobody can figure out.

Changed both front rotors and pads. I think its coming more from the rear. Only thing I haven't changed would be u joints. -

I stand corrected. It was 75/90 GL5 gear lube -

Sorry! Should have specified. Not sure witch one I have. It's an 89 pioneer. I6 4x4 long bed if that helps. I can't remember what weight we used but I used a bottle of Lucas transmission fluid then topped it off with whatever alldata calls for. I just can't remember the weight. I know it wasn't like 80/90 it was higher numbers.... Sorry! -

Yeah, I realize I can't see it.... It is covered in grease so I imagine cleaning it up and sanding then connection will help loads. Alt, bat, and starter all check out fine btw -

I have had a ton of transmission work done on this thing. Replaced slave and master (twice) and replaced a line or two. Would that be something that they took off when they dropped the tranny to get to slave? Trying to remember if this noise came before or after I had all the work done.... -

My belt is in bad shape. I think the fan pulley it wraps around is off set. It pulls it off and splits a rib off it. My other MJ did the same thing. Battery is just a year old but there is some minor acid build up around posts. I will check the negitive to the motor. Thanks for the tip. I will post again if that doesnt solve it. Will also have all electrical systems checked at work. -
Trans fluid smell in cab
starkizer replied to starkizer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
After removing all the boots and dust covers and all that. Right where the shifter meets the transmission. There is like a little bowl looking thing and it gets just a little tiny bit of fluid pooled up right there in that bowl and after driving it gets hot and starts smelling. I will try and get a picture of the exact spot I'm talking about so I can show everyone. I don't think that the transmission is over filled, but will check again. I drained and filled like your supposed to. (I hope) took out bottom plug let it drain, put it back in and pumped it into the top plug. Used a bottle of Lucas and the rest is the right fluid. -
So here's to hoping that describing a sound will have better results then the countless people that can actually hear it have given me.... Sort of like a constant wooshing sound coming from underneath. Only while moving. Doesn't get louder or softer with speed. Had all breaks checked, both diff fluids changed. Tranny and transfer case all changed. No play in u joints. Do have exhaust leak(s) but that's a different sound. One parking brake cable gives me trouble but don't think that's it. Hoping that its not a rear wheel bearing.... Heard you have to remove axle to change them..... Ideas? Maybe tire road noise? Drives me nuts!!!
-
Finally after a month I figured out why I was smelling tranny fluid in the cab, but I don't know how to fix it. If you pull the center console and take off the shifter boot and all that stuff then take off that little dust cover. I found tranny fluid pooled up there. Cleaned it up thinking I spilt some ( had work done) week later and I'm smelling it again..... I guess there is a seal or something there that needs replaced, can I get to it up top or do I get to drop the tranny again?

weird power problem..... (I know, crazy right)
starkizer replied to starkizer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
To clarify, by lose power I mean it didn't blow as hard like it was cutting in and out. Never shut off or anything. And only does it when run at 70+ mph. So no trouble in town. -
My MJ is my daily driver but I only drive a few miles a day. Well, I've started to put more miles on it and drive on the highway more. Tonight I noticed at full throttle against the wind trying to stay at 70 mph giving her all she's got etc etc. Basically pushing her harder then I ever have. The blower fan for the heater would lose power. it was just on vent as I have no factory a/c. It also seemed like the dash lights kind of dimmed in and out ever so slightly. Maybe a bad ground? Think the 2 problems are connected? I know, electrical problems on a Comanche?!?! Unheard of! :P. Thanks as always!

I am wanting to get a center console and a set of bucket seats. I have a 89 Pioneer with a bench seat in decent shape. If anyone out there wants a bench seat (Grey) I would pull it out and trade in a heartbeat. I also have a parts truck that I could get something off of (maybe) if there is something else you might want to trade. Let me know!
