Ok well I took a break from messing with her for a while and now I am ready to figure this out. She won't start unless I spray starting fluid in it, or pump gas in it. Could it just be that the gas tank is dirty or the fuel filter? When I left off I had pretty much become convinced that it has nothing to do with the ignition system, or the priming from the injector.

Still having to spray starter fluid every single time I want to turn my truck on. Any ideas?

Thank you for clearing that up Eagle, it makes more sense that way. I guess for good reason. Well I looked around and I can't find the leak for anything but the reserve is bone dry. Going to fill her back up. bleed it and see if I can't track this leak down. Hoping it should all be pretty straight forward from here.

Thanks, i'll check everything tomorrow. Today it's even worse. If I don't hold the brake it starts going very very slowly, yesterday the clutch would engage enough to keep it from moving. I looked around to see if I could see if it leaked but I couldnt find anything. I'll know for sure tomorrow. Thank you all again.

I have a 86 4x4 2.5L manual tranny comanche. Ok this problem came out of no where, worked fine yesterday now today it's nearly impossible to get into reverse and it's one hell of a work out to get her into any other gear. The release point on the clutch pedal is less than 1/4 inch now too. Feels like if i could just press 2-3 inches further all would be well. I am thinking it's either my clutch slave or master cylinder but I have never had clutch issues before so I don't know how to check. Any info would be greatly appreciated, also if you have any other ideas as to what the problem could be please let me know.

Well she fixed herself for 2 months but now I am back where I started but now even if she has been warmed up she won't start without a shot of starting fluid.. Fuel filter? Fuel pump seem likely? Really don't want to buy a fuel pump just to find that's not it but I have a feeling that's my problem..

Wil not start without a shot of fuild

Hey I am having this exact same problem I have replaced just about everything you have as well. It runs great once I get her started and all that takes is a quick spray of starter fluid and she fires right up. Have you made any progress on this issue? or have any ideas? No one else had this problem? -

It starts with starting fluid and once it starts it runs and stays running. I can drive it up and down the road but it won't start with out a quick shot of starting fluid.

Alright I hooked it up and while in run it read 3.62 then while being cranked it dropped down into the negatives and ultimately rested on 0. That's not jumping around in the right direction is it?
-
No it will not start still.

I have spark from the plugs. I went ahead and replaced them all though. Crank Shaft Position Sensor tested good. Power to coil also tested good. Checking coil next, and then if it passes I guess it's ignition control module?

Of course my battery died from too much tinkering so I will be going to get a charger from a friend this afternoon and doing all those tests tomorrow if all goes well.

Wild looking J-truck custom on Ebay

That thing is pretty bad looking, I want that exhaust. -
Sounds like a plan, Oreillys isn't a far walk at all. I'll get down there tomorrow morning. Thanks a lot for the help man. Got the meter and tested it. As you called it. She read 3.63 so the problem is else where. Also checked the coil input it read 11.6

I tested the injector and it clicked just as you said it would. I am going to get a meter to test its plug tomorrow. Any more ideas? Sensors or something?
-
Yeah i was thinking the same. I mean it doesn't make much sense that it would start out of no where then not if it was an injector and I am certain it wouldn't have been able to drive around. I changed my plug wires including the one from the coil thinking maybe one of the plugs were grounding out. How ever it does seem to consistently get a spark. I will try testing the injector but I agree i highly doubt that will be the problem. Thank you very much jmderyke. Is there a part that makes it spray before it is running? Cause it would make sense if it wasn't spraying until it was actually running, maybe the gas I poured in started it and the injector took over after?
-
Which post do I tap with 12 volts on the injector? I am pretty sure that has to be it. It seems to stay bone dry in there. I had my girlfriend try and start it while I watched and I didn't see or smell any sign of gas. I want to test it before I get another. Can't really afford the 125 bucks right now if it isn't the actual problem.

I tried pouring a lil gas in and nothing but right after that I started messing with a spark plug and it look a bit orangish burnt I tried to start it just to see if it would fire and the engine tried to start so I put the plug back in and tried again and it started. I then turned it off again cause I saw a minor gas leak. I tightened that up and stopped the leak and started it again no problem. I got excited cleaned my tools up tried to figure out what I did and moved the truck. Turned it off and just for fun tried to start it again. It won't start.. Sounded great while she was running though.
-
I will try both tomorrow morning. Where would you recommend I get the 12v from?
-
I did not test the injector. I have never worked on an engine that didn't have a carb or two on it so I am a bit intimidated by all that witchcraft. Not sure how to go about checking it. The wires are in the correct firing order, battery is fully charged. Fuel pump is fine, fuel filter is good. Starter is brand new, cps new. The distributor cap and rotor look new. I checked to see if there was spark from the number 1 wire with a screw driver and there was a spark.
-
alright, so I changed out the CPS and now I have a spark coming from the spark plug wires now but still not starting. I checked on the fuel flow in the engine bay and it sprayed out just as it should. I am sorta at a loss as to what the next step should be. Also anyone know what size socket is needed to get at these spark plugs. None of mine seem to be able to fit. Thoughts? ideas? questions?
