  1. wow, what the hell am i smokin? pictures...duhhh lol ill wait for daylight..
  2. a fellow Titusvillian? or ex-titusvillian rather? no way and thanks  i could never turn down a free project
  3. i recently inherited this '88 pioneer from my girlfriends dad. he was going to scrap it and told her she could destroy it in the woods but instead i said i would fix it up (at least to some extent) its a 4cyl 4x2 with a 4spd so nothin special, but hey, it was free there was something wrong with the ignition...so he started pulling apart the dash and steering column. my girlfriend wanted part of it too so she broke the entire casing off the column and so just about everything that had anything to do with the key turning, was eventually on the floor... here it is sitting at her dads in DeLand, FL here's right before the haul to Titusville. its about 50-60 miles or so i had it sitting at my sisters apartment for a few days so i could make room for it now that i could fool around with it on my own time, i started looking for the ignition switch. my uncle told me about the old screwdriver trick. upon looking around i realized that the rod was still there, just a lil bent, so i didnt need a screwdriver. i pushed in the rod anddd....nothing. so i popped the hood to get a better look and then found that we never hooked up the battery since the last time we messed with it at her dads house. so on with the terminals and try again. she cranks! probably the first time runnin in over a year. it idled pretty rough and if i didnt feed any gas, it stalled out. this thing was sitting for a while in Deland so the next day i added some stabilizer and about half a gallon of gas to the tank. cranked again and she turned over first try! gave it a lil gas and it sounded much better. this was the most success since ive seen this thing for the first time  unfortunately i didnt have much time to screw with it. so a couple days later on my day off, i tried again. still ran rough, but i kept my foot on the gas for a couple minutes to get the nasty stuff out of the system and once i let off, she idled fine...so fine i took her for a test drive. just down the road and back again. then i thought, well that went so well, i might as well drive it home. so i drove it home...about 7 miles I'm guessing? the brakes are terrible, but other than that, drove like a champ. and now it sits in my driveway where i have unlimited access. anyways, i cleaned it up a bit. threw out a bunch of broken steering column parts, trash, and extra screws bolts nuts and whatnot, vacuumed out the broken glass and dog hair, and degreased the engine bay a lil bit. i wish i took a picture of the interior before i cleaned...but here's after and some pics of the engine bay... also, the oil cap is split right in half, so when its driven, it spits oil all over. I'm still hunting for the right cap *hint hint* if anyones got a spare. i think its an aftermarket valve cover though... but anyways, here's before ...during....(thats the underside of the hood) and after i wasnt goin crazy with it, so theres still a lot of gunk. i just happened to find a can of generic degreaser and it was my day off so anyways, thats it so far, i still need that oil cap, and i also need to find a driver side window. went to the junkyard today for prices and they want $40 for it :fs2: (also snagged an oil cap from a cherokee just for kicks and it didnt fit :shake: ) well, at least its pocket-sized so if they really miss it, i can sneak it back in :brows: oh yeah, and no parking break haha
  4. anyone out there with a 2.5...think you can post a pic of your vacuum lines? mostly near the carb, and booster area? my '88 is runnin, but theres a few lines that lead to nowhere right now :hmm:
  5. yep as long as its a 4door one of the many great things about a 'manche
  6. I'm looking for a driver side window as mine is shattered. i havent even looked in junkyards or asked about prices...actually i havent even looked at the pass. side to see if i need any regulator parts or anything. theyre crank windows, i can tell you that. basically i towed it home, but had to get the dolly back to uhaul and it was going to rain all weekend so i took off the door panel to see what was wrong (because i knew it didnt crank) and found that there was no window, just a bunch of shattered glass. since then i just put a trash bag over the top part of the door and it works wonders (for now) ..but if anyones got a spare, i live in the space coast area of FL. let me know what youre asking as far as a price. i would prefer not to ship for obvious reasons tomorrows my day off so ill post again once i find out if i need any regulator parts....i don't know how these crank windows are set up. i just remember seeing some kind of sprocket type thing sitting at the bottom of the door that was attatched to some shattered glass so idk
  7. awesome thanks everyone tomorrow is a day off, unfortunately I'm waiting around for payday (i literally have 2 bucks in my account right now) so i won't be getting any cleaners yet but could at least get a pic of the engine bay to show what I'm dealing with just for fun. there is oil everywhere. the cap is cracked and its not even the right one so...yeah, oil everywhere. i checked the air filter the other day and there was some oil on the edges of that too filter wasnt bad at all, it was just a little bit along the edges. probably just soaked into the box where it clips together
  8. thanks everyone i appreciate any input. I'm very excited to get this thing cleaned up...I'm just waitin for a day off. one thing that I'm kinda worried about is the fact that its sitting at my sisters apartment complex, and now that i think of it, i don't think theres a hose available... :wall: on the other hand, the camaro thats been taking up space in my driveway for years is now gone as of this morning so once i get this thing to idle a little smoother (i think its just bad gas considering its been sitting for a while and after adding stabilizer, it didnt stall out) i can drive it to my house and clean it up there. in the meantime, ill take advantage of the extra parking spot while i can
  9. alright i guess i could find some of that. you guys seem pretty confident that the water doesnt damage the electrical components and webbjeepxj thats a great idea. looks great, but i don't think ill be taking stuff apart and remounting them...at least not before the initial cleaning if at all thanks guys
  10. alright so i got my first 'manche...for free. got her runnin too. runnin rough, but runnin nonetheless. theres a few small things here and there that i need to take care of before i start really messin with it tho. for one, my girlfriends dad (previous owner) told me he put the wrong cap on the valve cover so it spits oil when it runs. well, if anyone takes a look under the hood, its obvious he wasnt lying. there is oil and grease everywhere. so thats the first thing i want to do is clean it up a bit. then find the right cap obviously. I'm just wondering if theres an easier way to do it than to cover all the electrical components and sensors and whatnot before spraying and hosing. i guess i just don't trust myself....I'm sure i would miss something and theres already so much stuff to do that i don't want to add to the list with electrical problems. is there any thorough cleaning/degreasing, WATERLESS products that anyones aware of? :dunno: BTW ive been on this forum for a few months, but i am now "officially" a member since i finally got the jeep into town. so hello all you jeepers out there! :wavey:
  11. I'm going to at least get it home first. I'm going to clean it up and maybe do some light body work on it first. i mean, my gf's dad was going to scrap it, so he would have gotten at least $100 out of it but since I'm taking it for nothing, i can't really sell it off of his property ya know? but i should have it home within the next couple of weeks probably. ill give it a good cleaning inside and out and then ill figure out what i wanna do. but theres a big possibility i would sell it i would have posted in the classifieds if i knew for sure but thanks for lookin...ill keep posting
  12. the side markers on the front are missing so it looks like the front is smashed but its just because theres nothing there but a bulb
  13. i figured there would be a lot of people doing swaps... though every time i go to the junkyard all i find is 4.0s with the head taken off already so its basically open cylinders filled with rust colored water :wall: anyways i just saw the truck again yesterday...though i didnt spend much time with it. i had to work at 2 andy my gf now drives a mini cooper so i was just drivin that around for a while instead  ...fun lil car. especially with the 5spd but yeah, first time seein the comanche in the daylight. the floors are rotted out but other than that i should be able to clean 'er up really nice. ill have to throw up a pic. still not sure what i wanna do with it yet so if anyone wants to make an offer, I'm sure ill consider selling. I'm in central FL....space coast area
  14. thanks, thats good news  i know there is something wrong with the ignition. thats why it currently sits about 50 miles away. I'm goin to mess with it again in the morning. I'm hoping the key was just stuck and its not the ignition switch but i might have to hotwire it to get it home. anyways, it was running before the key "got stuck" (my gf's dad sold it for a few hundred bucks but they brought it back for their $ because the key wouldnt turn. now thats a common problem with any car, but also an easy fix. but right now theres only half the steering column's components still attatched because her dad thought there was something wrong with the tumblers and they tore it all apart so idk whats gonna happen now) but shouldnt i be worried about anything being warped if i wanna make it a new daily driver? is it an easy motor to clean up?
  15. ok, so i know any car can last as long as its kept up with as far as maitenence. my dads s-10 has about 280k and looks and drives like new. but I'm wondering about how the 2.5L holds up. my girlfriends dad was going to scrap his comanche and told her she could take it in the woods and have fun with it til it dies but i decided to save a jeeps life.....maybe it was his daily driver for quite some time so its been in running order this whole time, but its up to about 276k. its an '88 pioneer 4cyl 2wd with a 4spd. my guess is that if i wanted to do anything with it, id have to completely rebuild the motor or replace it right off the bat. does anyone agree? disagree? how about the tranny? I'm not looking to build a mud truck just yet or anything, i think i mostly just want heat, a fuel gauge that works and to be able to shift gears myself. how long do you think it would last as is? :dunno:
  16. i think you and i have the same problem. only difference is ive only seen (or been able to mess with) my MJ once. its sitting at my girlfriends dads house about fifty miles away. if i can start it and get it home, its mine when i got there, most peices to the steering column were taken off and on the floor, though i did some disassembly to these "metal rods" all the work was done in the dark. we went trhough about 4 bulbs with the droplight before calling it quits for the night, but i did discover that this other metal rod you are thinking of goes to the steering lock. there is a metal plate under the steering wheel with notches cut out of it for the rod to slide into to lock the wheel. when we pryed this rod out (with the spring and white plastic peice falling to the floor) the wheel was no longer locked and would turn freely
  17. sweet thanks guys. ill have to try this during the daylight hours. i don't want to bust out anymore lightbulbs with the droplight. those things are so sensitive! ...i hope all the pieces are salvageable...or that i can figure out how to put it back together lol
  18. haha...thats one of the pieces that is now on the floorboard. (the spring and rod that locks the wheel that is, i didnt look for any actual switch. of course, this was done at night with a droplight. we went through 3 bulbs lol) and what sucks is the jeep is sitting about 50-60 miles away from where i live so ill have to wait til next weekend before i can do anything
  19. hello everyone :waving: I'm a new member as of today (within a few minutes of posting this) and ive got an '88 comanche pioneer sitting at my girlfriends dads house. if i can get it started and drive it home, its mine. the problem is, theres something wrong with the ignition system somewhere. i just saw the jeep for the first time last night and when i got there it was already taken apart. my girlfriend was getting a kick out of taking the steering column apart and all related pieces (which are now in pieces). i figured ill hotwire it next time i go and either replace everything we broke or set up the ignition with a toggle switch or something. i guess I'm just looking to find out the color coding for the wires or just the best way to get it started. oh yeah, the reason they started taking it apart....they said the key wouldnt turn in the tumbler. i got it to the first try just by pushing it in a lil bit but it was already taken apart by then so maybe something was knocked loose. either way, if i turn the key now, it will turn almost a full 180 degrees in the tumbler but nothing happens. (i guess because theres nothing left on the steering column after a nights worth of tearing it apart....what can i say? my gf enjoyed it) ..no lights on the cluster, no fuel pump noise or anything. at this point it can be a number of things thats wrong with it, but her dad says its got a new battery. (and it was running fine when he sold it, but they brought it back to him because they couldnt turn the key) its a 4 banger with a 4spd if thats any help. oh yeah and the headlights and flashers work too so its def not the battery ...soo uhhh....any input is good. her dad just told her she could take it in the woods and fool around with it cuz he just wanted it gone and i was like ill take it! so if it ends up needing a whole lot we might just go back to that first idea or ill do some kind of swap. who knows what the plan is yet :dunno:
