Struggling to bleed internal slave

Didn't mean to imply I wasn't going to try - Will do that very soon and report back. -
Struggling to bleed internal slave
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, resurfaced flywheel, new clutch disc, new pressure plate, new internal slave. All in a new-to-me 1993 AX15. I can get the pedal feeling pretty darn firm, but the throwout bearing is clearly not pushing all the way into the pressure plate like it should. I am leaning toward trying a new master cylinder and line. Maybe I pumped air into the line and messed it up? Can anyone recommend a bolt-in replacement? -
Struggling to bleed internal slave
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I am assuming the master cylinder is original to the car. I don't know how to tell. It's definitely old and dirty. I suppose I will try a new one with a new line as well and see if I have any luck. -
Hey all, So I'm about 99% finished swapping my BA10 for an AX15. At this point I need to get the clutch operating correctly and I can test drive it.. I'm all by myself so I've only been able to try vacuum bleeding and gravity bleeding so far. Neither have worked yet. I can't tell if I'm not bleeding the clutch properly, or if I made a big mistake by machining my flywheel. It seems like I've bled out most of the air, the clutch pedal gets nice and stiff after pumping it for a while when it's all closed up. But I can't get the trans to go fully into neutral with the pedal down. I can force it into first and second gear and it will engage. But when I press the clutch pedal in the tires keep spinning. Trying to go into reverse produces a horrifying grinding noise.. Is there some magic trick to get an internal slave system fully bled? Could it be that the flywheel is just too thin now that it's been resurfaced? Crusty

87 Comanche rear coils
CrustyBoy replied to Jeep_Rat's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
What in tarnation is that? Ultra short bed? -
I'm definitely open to adapters and aftermarket options at this point. Right now I'm just simply swapping in a 2WD AX15 in place of a BA10. No transfer case or anything. I'd like to eventually do a 4WD conversion but that would be a ways off. So between the plate suggested by @howeitsdone, the adapter made by Novak, or the crossmember you linked, which do you think is the best option? I don't see me trying any other transmissions down the road, even if I did an LS swap it would still be with an AX15.

Yeah that's why I'm posting here. Ordered one from them about a month ago and have been waiting since. If someone here could get me one sooner I'd get a refund. Not the biggest fan of DeadJeep's practice of selling parts they don't have in stock.

Hello, I'm looking for the correct crossmember so I can complete my BA10 to AX15 swap. If anyone has a proper AX15 crossmember they'd like to sell me please let me know! - Crusty

Thanks for clarifying, Pete. I've read a few places that it just breathes out the top of the hole where the shifter goes? I guess I'm just wondering if there's anything I need to connect or hook up in that regard. Just an update on my progress overall - I'm at a standstill right now because I can't find a correct crossmember (for AX15). I have tried ordering one from DeadJeep but they've had me waiting now for about a month. I'll be posting a classified here if anyone has one they want to sell me.

Key Parts Tail Lenses
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Better get em while you can! You never know which production run will be the last. -
I have begun the process of swapping my transmission with a 2WD AX15 I found online for $100. I have pretty much everything disconnected/removed at this point and just need to pull out the BA10. Here's some random pictures: The AX15. Is there no breather hose/fitting on these things? My BA10 appears to have one. Need to figure out a new rear bumper situation. Leaning toward the black Westin-Fey unit. Looks like I have a Dana 44 in the rear. Should I just rebuild it or is it worthwhile to swap in a Ford 8.8? Driveshaft out The bracket here that sits between the BA10 crossmember and the trans itself was not bolted to the trans. When I got it all loose it just fell right out.. So I think my trans was just sitting on top of the whole assembly with no fasteners this whole time. Great.. Speedo Cable. Does anyone know how to adapt this two-prong electrical connection from the BA10 to an AX15? The connection is different from one to the other. I noticed the internal slave cylinders are different between the two transmissions as well. My BA10 has a threaded style fitting for the hydraulic line. The AX15 has some kind of quick-snap disconnect thing. I'll get a picture of the difference later. Does anyone know off hand if there's a way to adapt the older style to the newer style? Would like to avoid buying another slave cylinder if I can. Edit - Here is the connection type I'm talking about: More pictures and progress soon.

Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'll ask him to take a look. Never got up close to the pile. Appreciate you confirming that with me. Would've sucked to get it all ready to install and have the wrong crossmember! -

Interesting, yeah I think you're right. Here's a closer up picture of it: There is no dip in the middle like in your pictures. But the holes and other dimensions seem correct based on pictures I'm seeing around the internet. Is there a difference between a cherokee and a comanche crossmember maybe? Edit: After some more looking around it looks like this crossmember may be for an automatic transmission. Bummer! Guess I'll be buying one after all. -
Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Quick update - I did go and pick up the 2WD trans for $100 last night. The fella was very kind and threw in a crossmember for free as he had a few laying around. I'll document my install and how it runs over in my build thread in the coming weeks. I am still tossing around the idea of getting the external slave parts. When I eventually get a 4WD trans it will probably be from a rebuild shop and not include the bell housing so it probably makes sense to try and do it now. Some pics of it: -
Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Good tip, updated my profile with location - I have been hawking car-part.com the past few weeks. Seems like pickings are pretty slim around here. Cherokees come up frequently but they get crushed really fast. It's very annoying. There are lots of places selling "reman core" units for over $2000 around here. For that kind of money I'm definitely going to order from Novak. -

CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 2WD AX15 is $100. Maybe I'm thinking wrong here but it seems worth it to me even if I have to get an entirely different 4WD AX15 later. Would like to be able to continue driving my truck daily while I find a tcase, wait for Novak/shipping, drive shaft, etc. Plus the Novak estimate for a trans, tcase, and all necessary parts came back around $5000. Should hopefully be picking that 2WD AX15 up today. So given all that I have one more question - Does it make sense to convert this 2WD trans to external slave? I could see it being in the truck for a good while. Might even consider an 8.8" rear end swap before thinking about 4WD again if it all works out. -
Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you for that link. Yes, I do want to convert to 4WD some day. The 2WD trans is just priced to sell and would fix the immediate issue of my BA10/5 starting to fail. I really don't want to waste time messing with the internal slave on the Peugeot or trying to fix the leak it has. It sounds like no matter what you do you'll always have to baby a BA10. So I figure if this guy online wants to sell me his 2WD AX15, I would run it in the mean time while I'm sourcing parts to go 4WD later. -

Well I see a 1993 2WD AX15 online for a really good price. It's internal slave though: Does anyone know if that would fit up to my 88 4.0? Would the drive shaft length change going from 2WD BA10/5 to AX15? Is it possible to convert it to an external slave setup? -
Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Right, so does my original drive shaft have the same spline count/size as an NP231 would? Basically wondering if I will be able to shorten and re-use it or need to buy a different one entirely after the Peugeot is changed out for an AX-15/tcase. -
Clutch Pedal Losing Pressure
CrustyBoy replied to CrustyBoy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you so much for that detail. Does the rear drive shaft for my 2WD Peugeot trans have the same spline count as one would for a 4WD AX15? When I reached out to Novak for pricing, the reason they wouldn't price out a 4WD trans for me was because they said the output shaft was different. Basically I'd like to do everything from the top half of your list to get it running, and then put off the bottom part for a little while. So I would run a transfer case disconnected/disengaged until I can get together a front axle and everything else needed to hook that up. -
Hey Yall, My clutch pedal lost pressure suddenly the other day. I can still get into all the gears for now, everything still works. It just feels like there's no action until you get the pedal about 2 inches from the floor. It's a BA10/5 2WD truck. I checked the reservoir and it was empty. Filled it up and pumped the pedal about 100 times. Pressure definitely came back for a while but there's clearly a puddle on the ground underneath the truck, and the level in the reservoir dropped quite a bit. The next morning the pressure was gone again. Not exactly sure where it's coming from but I have to assume it's the slave cylinder. I'm going to repeat that fill and pump process a few more times and see if it holds fluid after all the air is bled out. Anyway, I'm thinking I want to buy an AX15 for this truck. Is there anywhere other than Novak that would be a good choice to buy from? I reached out to Novak already and they seem hesitant to sell me a trans because my truck is 2WD (not sure why, I'm tryng to convert to 4WD). I would just need a different drive shaft to be compatible with 23 splines right? I'm located in Ohio so I would need to be able to go pick it up or have it shipped here. Appreciate your insight.

Cleanest MJ I've seen
CrustyBoy replied to Warren99's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Is that not the aftermarket Westin-Fey bumper? I've been thinking about getting one. -
Yeah it is definitely convenient for access around the filter and distributor. I can take some up close pictures for you that show how it's fixed when I get home later this evening. Edit: Here's how it's fastened
-
The reservoir bottle is mounted to a couple "L" brackets that have been bolted to the firewall. There is also a zip-tie holding it on there for good measure.. I am about 99% sure it is this bottle (Dorman 603-001): Amazon Some day I'd like to get a proper Jeep bottle and mount it down around the distributor where they would've been from the factory.
