  1. Ok so we all make stupid decisions that we live to regret... Me and my handling of my jeeps are no exception. So here's the deal, long story short, I was being an idiot and tried to launch my jeep on pavement in 4WD because I didn't put two and two together and realize that high RPMs mixed with Sticky tires on a sticky surface impacting a weak transmission in a truck built for cruising around at 55 MPH down the highway wouldn't end well. Well idiot me dropped the clutch anyways and immediately heard a loud POP/BANG. After that, Id engage the tranny and while Id hear the gears engage and move, the vehicle did not.. However, going through all the gears I was able to get 5th gear to grab and limped the poor MJ home (didnt know I could climb hills in 5th gear at 15 MPH at 500 RPM...) Anyways, haven't tried reverse yet, and probably will here soon. Talking with people made it sound like I sheared a shaft and that's why only 5 gear grabs... If the tranny is toast I've wanted to AX15 swap it anyways just because it's a good transmission that'll go into a really nice, un-restored truck with tons of life left in it (after you go through the rats nest of vacuum lines and wiring in the engine of course lol) Any thoughts? is the tranny smoked? anything to check? any good tips on swapping that won't leave me more broke than I already am (College student) Thanks all, appreciate your input. Cheers
  2. Hello all, I have a 1988 Pioneer Longbed with 4 wheel drive. A while ago, my turn signals and wipers went out and I have not been able to track down the cause. I've checked the front lights, sockets, replaced sockets and bulbs, checked the fuses, swapped fuses, checked the blue relay on the steering column (no signs of burning or fraying/failure), checked wiring (no cracks or cut wires to my knowledge), and replaced the turn signal switch. Nothing. Put the Hazard fuse in place of the turn signals and still nothing. I checked voltage and it seems almost like there is power going into the input metal for the fuse, but very little power (3 volts or less) going out... I'm young and inexperienced with all this and am pretty unsure of whats wrong or where to go from there. i can adjust the high or low beam setting still which makes me think it isn't in the switch itself.. everything else seems to work (interior lights, instrument cluster and associated lights, cab lights... Ect.) Also, my idle has been funky for the last year as it smells rich and it idles at 1200-1500 RPM with steady anomalies that make it idle at 2k, 2500, or 3k RPM. replaced the idle control sensor, still nothing. One note, the plastic casing around the accelerator cable is broken so the engine wants to hold its throttle 3/4 open, so I've got zip ties and rubber bands keeping that down for now. Also adjusted the idle tap/screw so it idles at 750 RPM and not 1200. These are just teenage-inspired temporary fixes to keep the thing in a condition that I can drive it in the event of an emergency. Again, I'm young and inexperienced like mad so I need advice and help and some mercy from the real mechanics out there lol. cheers guys. thanks
  3. Alright! thanks! Probably will do the delete if I can't nail down those lines
  4. Alright. Sounds good. I'll whip out the butane torch and see if I can find a vacuum leak somewhere. I'll come back to this thread if I can't find it or have some trouble doing the CAD delete (shouldn't be a worry) Thanks!
  5. Alright. So Chrysler did lock that front driveshaft eventually? Or did they find another method to engage/disengage it? And do you know where those lines into the firewall go? Can I get to any if I pull my dash apart? Thanks again.
  6. Hello everyone, I'm newer to the forum but have used many of your threads as some solid guides to help out with my comanches. I have seen many threads about this topic before, but none of them cover exactly what I need or want. With that being said, as the title states, my 4WD is not engaging.. Took it to the dunes the other day and noticed that the T-Case would engage but not the front axle. I narrowed it down to the shift fork not locking the axle into 4wd. I have seen many videos and tutorials/guides on how to do a CAD delete and just manually lock it in so it never fails again, but I have been told this also engages the running gear and will cause more friction and wear down the road (not to mention take my MPG down a notch or two). So, I'm guessing its the vacuum lines that aren't working, but I'm having a hard time finding where the lines go from the front axle. Anyone have any ideas where I might be having a leak/where the lines are going to? Also, the jeep overheats when I put into 4 Low and drive it for a bit... And before I forget, I have three 1988 jeep comanches, all 5 speed manuals, all 4.0 inline 6's, all relatively stock (bought them all used). The one I'm working on is a 1988 jeep comanche base model, 4.0, 5spd, AC/Heat, NP231 Command Trac transfer case, 153k miles. Thanks guys.
