  1. I'm not sure about the ratio on the current axle, we are going to pull it tomorrow morning as the plan for today fell through. I'm hoping that they are the same just so I have some extra parts. I tried to figure out the gear ratio through the VIN but you can't. And I was planning on checking all the specs again. Also, what would I even do with the knuckles that you are referring to? Thanks for the link. At least the axle will be out from under the truck now so getting the carrier back in and shimmed should be much easier.
  2. Sorry didn’t see this. I have 3.54 gears.
  3. When I search for part numbers both come up the same. Is that a mistake on my '86 you think? Or are they the same? I thought they were the same but as I said most people on here know way more than me including you most likely
  4. My current Dana 30 in my '86 has a bent axle housing, making it impossible to get my axle shafts back in after I was replacing a seal. Anyways, tomorrow I'm headed to the junkyard to pull a Dana 30 off a '98 Cherokee. I can't think of any major problems with doing this swap, but wanted to double check and get input from everyone on here, as I know there are probably many that have done something similar or know things I don't. I will most likely be using my original carrier with a new locker so that my gearing matches. Anyways, as the title states, anything I need to know??
  5. Hahahahaha hey guys so here’s my update on the diff. My dad always told me a story about how his cousin hit a tree with the truck before he ever got it, but I never thought/knew it caused any damage. Well here we are 30 years later and it turns out it did! The axle housing is bent, which explains why it was so hard to get the original axles out, and why I can’t get this new one in! Time to head to the local junk yard. Luckily one of them has 2 old 4wd XJ’s that recently got there…

    Long beds

my long bed has a better turn radius than my 03 honda civic
  7. I know that this hasn't been written on in a while, but I wanted to fix the speed of my wiper blades as well and I saw this post. Is the wiper blade speed a common problem? I've seen some other jokes on here about Arizonans needing faster speed for the rain, but I too, am an Arizonan and it's way too slow! Does this project fix such issues?
  8. I’m going to pull out the carrier again and recheck the locker, then get the axle past the seal and ready to insert into the locker.
  9. I'll check and update tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far
  10. Yeah I understand. The only reason I think it might be something else is because of how hard it was to take apart. I didn't mention this in my original post but we had to weld the two axle pieces together and then rig up our own puller to get it out. Wasn't easy and it took hours for what should have taken seconds.
  11. I honestly don't think I installed the locker incorrectly but I could be totally wrong
  12. I shined the light down the tube and I cannot see all the splines. Would that possibly be a problem with the locker?
  13. We installed a spartan locker. I'm not really worried about the seal though honestly. I was going to use needles around the seal to keep it centered since technically the seal was too small, but I couldn't even fit any in between the space between the seal and the housing so that should give you an idea on how close it was
  14. Hello all, I'm running into more problems than I think is normal on my front diff. (Decided to put a locker in and install a one piece axle on the passenger side). First, when pulling out the original 2 piece axle, it was extremely hard to remove. In fact, we had to weld the two axle pieces together in order to remove it. Seal location was moved from the CAD to the center diff housing, and we thought that the worst was over, but the hole on the passenger side is microscopically too big for the seal that commonly works there when doing this conversion. In the end we ended up using JB weld to keep the seal in. (Using regular sealant the seal would pop out, we could never get a pressure fit, and the seal needed to be so minimally larger that they didn't make one in that size. Today I put the carrier back in (locker installed) and I can't get the passenger side axle shaft in. I know sometimes it can be a pain, but remember my problems taking it out. Is there something off about my differential that I don't know about? Were some made with different bores near the carrier since they had the CAD system?! Need some help getting this one figured out. Seems like this diff just has a few odd things about it that we can't get figured out. What would cause the carrier to not line up correctly with the axle shaft?? Carrier is fully installed and torqued to spec. Thanks all
  15. Update: I ended up using some cork-rubber gasket and then used RTV to make sure the seal was good and to fill in the extra space for the awkward sizing and shape.
  16. Hey guys recently tore out my old brake booster to get a replacement because we think it's leaking and causing some low vacuum pressure as confirmed by our vacuum tests. Anyone know where to find the gasket that goes in between the firewall and if you can just make one yourself with some gasket maker? I know the gaskets are supposed to be sticky foam but I can't find the gasket anywhere. I have a 1986 2.8l V6. Just replaced it with part %54-74040 from autozone.
  17. isn’t firing order on this truck just 123456
  18. i would love to but as of right now it’s too expensive and would be too much work. i am moving out of state in less than a month and need this truck running to take with me.
  19. i’ve had the same experience. i’m almost positive they are correct. i can drive it on highway speeds and the engine starts and stays running but it continues to miss
  20. Hey all, I have searched around on these forums for quite a bit looking for a solution to a couple problems associated with my 2.8l. Engine was completely rebuilt, shaved cams, new bearings new rods, spark plugs, everything. Yet my engine continues to miss at idle speed. It gets worse when it is shifted into reverse, but it never kills the engine. Increasing the idle speed makes the engine sound better, but it still misses. It is inconsistent as well which is part of the confusing part. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
