I have a 88 MJ I'm putting in a 5speed, 4.0, 4x4. The gears in the rear now are 3.55 What is a good tire size for this gearing. I was wanting to do a SOA lift. And run 33s, but if thats gona be too much tire for my gears i can change. I'm just now starting this project so there is alot of room for change yet.

Ah, the reason i asked, was cause a noticed a lot of hills in your pics. I'm up here in there north west. Its all flat. Srue would be cool to have some hills like those to climb.

Well i might keep it pretty stock for now, its my daily driver to and from work. And my hunting truck. I am in the process of getting all the parts together to build a rust free 88 which will replace this blue one as a daily driver. Then I'm gona use it for play/abuse. I would love to see it sitting on some 33s but for now it spends too much time on the road for that. What part of Indiana are you from?

I bought my tires from them, And i though the black decals would match the doors good. LOL

I have replaced the drivers floor, changed a bunch of u-joints, and lots of other maintenance stuff. Nothing to exciting yet, just trying to keep it reliable now.

Here's my 89 Its got a HO 4.0 crapy 5speed. 4x4 The PO added power windows, locks and mirrors.

If you have an 88 MJ with dummy lights and no gauges, would Gauges from a 90 XJ fit? And is it a plug and play thing or do you have to cut wires?

Move perches around? What do you mean? I mean i could have a locker put in my front axle, and have the gears changed to what my rear is. Or I'm sure there are plenty D30 with 3.55 gears in the junk yards around hear. -
Engine swap Question Renex to HO

If gearing is gona be the worst problem, i can always pay to have the dana 35 gears swapped. The rear in my MJ auto is a D44 so I'm not ditching that! So i Think we have come to a conclusion the XJ with the 5speed would be a good way to go Even though its not a HO motor. Oh and i like auto trans manly because I'm lazy. My daily driver is a 5speed MJ. -
Engine swap Question Renex to HO
XXLMJ replied to XXLMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My motor is bad or going bad, so when i pull it i want to make the truck a 4x4. I'm basically looking for a XJ since they are so common, with a 4.0 and 4x4. I would love to keep a auto trans. but if i have to go with a 5speed i will. All depends on what XJ i find. The one i found is on Ebay and the owner doesn't know what trans. it is other than 5 speed. It is a 90 XJ so hopefully thats a good trans? -

Are the Renix motors that bad? I may have found one low miles, and cheap. 4x4, but its a 5speed. Next question is a Manuel swap hard to do? -

Engine swap Question Renex to HO
XXLMJ replied to XXLMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well i have another MJ that I'm driving now, old trusty, but very rusty. My 88 that i was talking about it rust free, even under the carpet! The only big problem is winter is coming very quick and my garage isn't very well heated. So i would want to swap everything even the dash, that does sound like a big job. Guess i could start tearing the MJ apart now til i can get my XJ. -
I have a 88 MJ 4.0 auto 2wd. The wrist pins are knocking pretty bad so i have been looking for a motor. I did find a whole XJ a 93 auto 4x4. I do know there is a difference in the HO and renex motor, but would this be a good swap? Or should i keep looking for another motor of the same year. I would like to keep the auto trans, and change the jeep over to 4x4 so i have been looking for complete XJs that are wrecked, but they all have HO motors. Any help or ideas would be great! Thanks

I had the whole valve cover off with it running and it seems like its in the valves but now the trick is figuring out which one its coming from? They all seem tight, all the push rods are pumping oil out. My buddy wants me to just beat on it an maybe the lifter will come loose. I don't think this is a good idea.
-
it has an aftermarket oil gauge, the reads 55-60psi all the time. The knock seem to get quieter the higher the rpms, but it may be because the over all motor is drowning it out. My buddy came over and swears it sounds like a lifter, of piston slap.
-
Yes there is a oil pump, he says he micrometer the crank and everything was in check. But with the odometer reading just under 230k i was thinking that thing could need a grinding too.
-
He just got back to me and said that he changed the rod bearings. Is it possible they aren't getting oil? The valve cover and oil pan had a ton of sludge in them. Could some of the oil ports to the bearings be plugged? Or is that to easy? I will have to give the flex plate a try tomorrow morning.
-
Ok i just emailed the guy again to see which bearings he actually did change. He told me the mains before. Can a guy get to these others from under the truck?
-
I just bought an 88 MJ 4.0, auto 2wd. The oil pan was removed cause the PO said he put new main bearings in. I have talked to him several time since i bought it, and he swears he did put in new ones. The truck is knocking pretty bad, sounds like its coming from the lower end. I didn't check anything really before i put the oil pan back on. My bad i believed someone. Any ideas on what the problem may be, or some stuff to check? Is there anything i can do before i remove the pan again?

Ok thanks for the info, One more question, can you swap these 2 trans with minimal work?
-
Peugeots for sure thanks for the pic. Is one of those 2 trans you showed me better than the other?
