  1. Got it! Didn't realize the service ports had valves underneath a cap...
  2. Hey guys, I appreciate the recommendation. I've got an '87 Comanche that hasn't blown cold for a couple years now. I thought perhaps the system needed a recharge, so I purchased the Red Tek 12a package from Amazon, started by hooking up the can of leak stop and oddly enough found the pressure to be very high (like 75-80 PSI). I believe I hooked it all up properly. I used the adapter with the blue cap and threaded to the service port with the larger hose. Am I doing something wrong here? Best, Casey
  3. I didn't think to take off the distributor cap because I just put a brand new one in 3 months ago. Lo and behold, my rotor snapped off completely. Pretty sure that'll do it. Looks like I'm cashing in on my O'Reilly's limited lifetime warranty. Thanks for your help, guys!
  4. Hi Everyone, Was hoping to get some advice on a no start condition for my 4.0 87 Jeep Comanche. It died on me the other day while driving through a parking lot. Here's what has been done. -CPS is only 3 months old and has been checked with a voltmeter (215 Ohms and 4 volts while cranking) -Replaced the fuel pump relay -Checked pump with fuel pressure gauge (pump is working) -Recently replaced the entire distributor. Spark cables and plugs are a couple years old. -Used in line spark plug checker (bulb lit up, but was VERY dim) I'm having a hard time remembering how bright the spark plug bulb would normally light up under working conditions. It's hard to see during the day, but still I would expect it to be a little brighter. Is it possible that my engine is getting a weak spark? If so, what could be causing this? Thank you very much for your time!
  5. Leak free so far. Fingers are crossed.
  6. Thanks all! Putting on the new pan today. Will let you know how it turns out...
  7. It's a brand new Melling oil pump and pickup. I changed it while the pan was off and it's the exact same size as the one I replaced. Thanks for the advice, everyone. I was kind of leaning towards a new pan already, but this has confirmed my suspicions. Is Spectra a decent brand? That's what O'Reilly's has. Otherwise, could someone direct me as to where I could get an OEM pan? PS - I have a torque wrench. Just got confused about the numbers.
  8. Hello All, I've read several entries on the CC website about oil leaks, RMS, etc. I'm having a problem of my own and figured I'd start a new thread as I've come by people who's situation is similar, but not identical. Here's the rub... After a year of dealing with a slow leak, I inspected my 87 Comanche to find oil leaking from the back of the oil pan onto the muffler. I did my checks and found that it wasn't leaking from the distributor, valve cover, oil filter adapter, or anywhere else. I was hesitant to tackle the RMS myself but decided I would do it to save some money. Overall, the the install went pretty smooth. Oil pan was a little tricky to get out as I don't have a lift on my truck, but with some maneuvering of the front axle while the rest of the truck was on jacks, I was barely able to get it out. The old cork gasket was definitely a challenge to break and I spent hours carefully scraping it off the block. I sanded down the pan, painted it, and was excited to put it back in with a brand new Felpro rubber gasket. Thought the project was almost complete! I was wrong. After installing the new gasket, I was excited to see that the location of the old leak had gone away. Good news. However, now the Jeep was leaking in a whole new spot (see diagram and picture below - area is highlighted with a red circle): I've tried 3 different Felpro gaskets. I'll admit - the first one was over tightened. Luckily, none of the bolts were damaged. The second one was smothered in RTV (I know this is controversial, but I was desperate) and sealed better in the highlighted area, but not perfect. Wasn't sure whether or not I was doing something wrong, so I had the third one was installed by a nearby mechanic. It pretty much leaks exactly like the first (except cost $300 more). My oil pressure gauge rests around 60 at operating temperature. I've read a little about house a bad PCV can cause positive pressure in the oil pan, but do not know much more than that. Is it possible this is causing the oil to get pushed out through this weak point? I'm tired of said project. It's gone on for too long now. I'm willing to spend money in order to get the leak to stop but do not want to waste any more time. Does anyone have thoughts on a different brand or type of gasket? Should I do the older style 4 piece? Should I buy a new oil pan? Ready to put this one to bed. Any help would be appreciated.
  9. I'll mount it as high as I can then. Thanks!
  10. Might be hard to believe, but after installing it, all my symptoms went away. Drove around the neighborhood for 20 minutes trying to reproduce the issue and could not create a single hiccup. I'll look into beefing up the ground at some point. For now, I've got 3 weeks of truck errands to do.
  11. All is well! After countless hours of working on this issue, a simple bolt into the block of the engine attaching the ground strap pictured above and BOOM! Truck is running like a dream. I have no idea why anyone would have ever removed it and will never know. Just glad my Jeep is running again. Thank to all who helped along the way.
  12. Oh, right. I also can't get it to start at all now that I've replaced the CPS. At least before I could drive it, just not well. Help! I'm worse off than when I started!
  13. Check the distributor indexing. Tip 13. I've installed and indexed a new distributor. The old one was leaking oil into the bottom of the cap below the rotor. Bypassed the C101 and refreshed grounds according to step 27. While underneath today I noticed what appears to be a ground cable dangling near my CPS (which I also just replaced). Looks important. Should this be connected to something?
  14. Is it supposed to mounted or connected to something? To the upper bell housing bolt . Thanks. Any particular bolt? Do those hoses need to connect to anything or does the trans exhaust just breath under the hood?
  15. Is it supposed to mounted or connected to something?
  16. In a constant effort to learn what different parts of my Jeep do, I got under the hood today and found these two hoses completely disconnected. They both run to the top of my transmission (one on the passenger side, one on driver). There's a bracket attached and it comes up right at the back of the engine. Can't tell you much more than that. Thoughts?
  17. So I've taken some time to go through the Jeep's combustion system. Got sidetracked by an oil pan/RMS project. Either way, it all has to get done at some point... Beginning to think it's a problem somewhere in the vacuum system. I went to Auto Zone and picked up both a fuel pressure tester and a vacuum pressure tester. Fuel checked out perfectly. 31 with the vacuum line connected and 39 with it disconnected. When I checked the vacuum system, I connected a gauge to the nipple facing straight up on the intake manifold (not the one that goes to the CCV breather) and read between 15 and 20. The needle was moving quite a bit. According to this youtube video, I think I would fall under catagory 3 (plug gap, dwell, coil distributor cap, or plug wires). However, I know the distributor and plug wires are in good shape as they've been replace recently. Anyone have thoughts on what I should tackle next? To be fair, the truck is driving smoother now. The EGR is completely bypassed at the moment and the truck only seems to sputter or die occasionally. I can drive it around the block and usually only have problems when I'm going up or down a hill.
  18. Thought so. Thank you.
  19. While changing the RMS today, I noticed the former owner made some kind of homemade gasket for the bearing plate. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I peeled it off in one piece because it didn't seem like something that needed to be there. Looks like it was made of RTV. Should I put it back or leave it off? Sorry. Still having trouble with uploading photos to this website. Do they have to be a certain type of file in order to work?
  20. My tires were already off the ground, so I jacked up the axle a couple inches. Surprisingly, it worked. I barely got it out, but it came with some convincing. Hopefully I can get it back in there after a thorough cleaning...
  21. After hours of working on the oil pan, I finally got the son of a B off. Now I can't seem to get it down to the ground due to the axle and the transmission being in the way. Anyone have suggestions on what I should remove to make it easier?
  22. You could still have a fuel pressure issue and/or an electrical issue. How's the vacuum line from the throttle body to MAP sensor? I would test the CPS. Tip 7. Have you performed any of my Renix Tips at all? I've attached a right angle connector to the "mystery nipple" and believe all is well there. Vacuum line to the MAP sensor is connected and looks ok. I plan to go through your entire set of renix tips this weekend when I get some time. Can I ask a stupid question? How does everyone post photos on this forum?
  23. I have not tested the CPS yet. It's an 87.
  24. Great! Thanks for your replies. I can always count on comanche club for useful information. In other news, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out why my truck is sputtering. Pretty certain it's a combustion issue, but as to what is causing it, I don't know. The issue came out of nowhere. At first I thought I was out of gas, but quickly realized it was a bigger problem. Thus far, I've looked at the TPS sensor, check my spark plugs, changed the air filter, replaced a couple vacuum hoses, verified the fuel filter is not too old (I bought this truck about a year ago), cleaned the throttle body, and checked fuel pressure (around 30 psi). I thought I had fixed it after cleaning the throttle body. It was pretty gummed up and for about an hour after it was cleaned out, the truck drove great. Then all of a sudden, it chugged to a stop on the highway and I had to get it towed home. Scratching my head now as to what project I should tackle next...
  25. Does anyone know what the nipple in the attached picture does (located directly across from the TPS sensor)? I noticed today that nothing is attached to it. Coincidentally, there's a hose nearby not attached to anything. I almost connected the two, but figured I should ask the group first.
