A Comanche Build.. The story of a dead XJ..

The hell you say! -
In case any one was curious I added up the receipts and I have invested roughly $1185.00 in the Mj to get it to its current road worthy condition.

1987 Comache Sportruck Chassis- Arkansas (Lots of Pics)
rustybottoms88 replied to rustybottoms88's topic in For Sale
Probably weighs 500 to 1,000 pounds. Even at 500 pounds that will require lots of heavy lifting. It would be better to bring some wood to make a temporary ramp and a hand winch to slide it up on to the trailer. Also, a couple friends to help. This. I have two hand winches and a few boards. You can measure the height of the trailer deck and we can put more boards under the frame of the truck to lift it higher if needed. I have a floor jack and a cherry picker.- 29 replies

SWB. I forgot to answer your question about loading it. If i have enough of a heads up I maybe able to have my dads tractor here to help in loading it. If you have a trailer with a winch you can probably just back under it and winch it on.- 29 replies

I didn't see any cracks in the chassis and the VIN number matches the title.- 29 replies

Time marches on and so does the MJ. The latest thing to give up on this oh gal is the starter. It was the original starter and I should of had it rebuilt but I had it traded off to Autozone and AZ starter #1 in the truck before I thought of a rebuild. AZ starter #1 did not disengage from the rein-gear very good so i pulled it off and put alittle yellow paint on the gear just to see what kinda engagement I had before I faulted the starter components. After I started the truck 3 times. I was not sure what to make of it but the AZ counter guy thought it looked great and faulted a component of the starter so I got AZ starter #2. I installed it and so far so good. BTW I got my CJ5 running!

I can check into your questions tomorrow but first.....is the vin on the dash and/or anywhere else? I am not familiar with the usual stress areas, but I am glad to check if you can tell me where to look.- 29 replies

Last Thursday my wife noticed the MJ taking a leak in the driveway. The upper radiator hose had sprung a leak, I was aware of its being in questionable condition and it finally let go. So I changed that out and drove it a few hundred miles over the weekend. I have also been having a steady power steering leak and I have been "flushing' the steering fluid by sucking the old fluid out of the reservoir with a turkey baster and then refilling with fresh. I have done this probably 3 times and I finally decided it looked clear enough to try some lucas stop leak. I will let you know how that works out. Lastly should my radiator be able to move forwards and backwards like this?? Seems like I am missing something that should hold it solid??

I bought my injector harnesses and valve cover gaskets from RiffRaff. I was very pleased with the prices and the service. I really liked the bible verse on the packing tape as well.

Thanks. it feels good to hop in the Mj and it crank right and up and have no problems from point A to point B. I am still learning about performance up grades on the 7.3L but right now it needs injector harnesses and valve cover gasket replaced on the drivers side (already did the passenger side). I know one of the first performance related mods I will do to it is aftermarket down pipe. Do the bellowed up pipes make much of a difference? Is the T500 hpop a bigger then stock pump and do you need it because of bigger injectors? Someone has already "deleted" the evpb on my OBS. lol Anyways I think my dad is bringing a tractor over to the house within the next few days so I may bring the AMC 20 back up to the house and start tinkering with it. The AMC 20 has 4.10 gears, the 2wd MJ will be ready for the drag strip. lol

I need a mini console. My OBS has 307K miles on it. It needs some work but it is good enough to check cows with for now. You all are gonna call me a liar but last fill up the MJ got 20 mpg.

A Comanche Build.. The story of a dead XJ..

I like the shoes and the topper. Do you work at a VW dealership? -
Thanks! The main thing is I want this thing to be as reliable as it possibly can be and basically all of the electronics had reached the end of its usable life. Sitting for 4-5 years did not help. haha Good luck with your build. I have more vehicles then I can pay to own. haha If I could receive government assistance for car ownership I would be at my limit. I have the 1989 MJ, the 2005 Powerstroke, the 1996 Powerstroke, 1973 CJ5 and a 2004 VW Passat. The Passat is not a TDI although I wish it was, but it has the 1.8T which I like performance wise but I hate working on. I also have a 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster Sports Coupe that is in need of a resto-mod and lets not forget the 1987 parts truck that hopefully will be going to a new home by next weekend. BTW do I need to keep the seat out of the 87? It has the indention in the middle of the bench to clear the auto shifter on the floor. The 89 has the shifter on the steering column but will I need the indention in the seat for to clear the tcase shifter??

I believe 99.9% of the replacement components I have put on the MJ at this point are standard brand. I like em. Some I got from local parts store some from Rock Auto. Speaking of Standard Auto Parts: BAM! Double BAM! Got my ICM in and was glad to see made in the USA on the bottom. I got it in lastnight and so we will see if that takes care of the loose connection problem. I checked my mileage this morning and for the 2nd take in a row my mileage figures out to 18mpg! Actually this last tank was 18.5 mpg. Sounds good to me! Kinda hate to kill the milage with a 4x4 swap.......ahhh who cares, Thats what the VW is for! Rusty approves:

I appreciate your help, I feel have pretty well ruled out the CPS. When i bought the last CPS I went by my Mopar parts dept and they did not have it and was not sure if they could get it. They suggested ebay.......Standard products seems to make a good one. I have the ACDELCO CPS in my tool box as a spare.

Thanks!

Ok When I bought that coil connector really what I wanted was this: The ignition control module. I think I will replace the the connector that go into it first. It died again this morning as I came down my dirt road, actually I was going across the cattle guard and thats where it would usually die before. I am guessing the extra shaking of goung across the cattle guard makes the ICM connector wiggle and lose connection for a moment. Once I got to work I popped the hood and touched the ICM connector and again as before it instantly stalled. Anyone know a part number for the Ignition Control Module connectors? Edit: I just reread Crusiers tip #4 and I should check to make sure the pin in the connecter is not retracted.
