Random and probably dumb question but does anyone know if a 5.7l hemi would fit in a comanche? I'm guessing it would be to wide to fit in between the frame rails but kinda curious
-
I'm thinking I'm not on the same page. I know that 93-95 zjs are obd 1. That is why I was asking about the 96 donor, because that gives basic obd 2 which if I'm going to put all the work into it I'm going to want.
-
Trying to get obd2 or I would use the older style.

Hi all, the title says it all, I'm in the early stages of putting together a plan to swap a 5.2L magnum into my 88 swb MJ and I'm looking to get some input from others who have done this or something similar. I'm considering this instead of an obd2 4.0L because the jeep basically needs to be rebuilt anyways, and for a bit more work why not have a v8? As of right now i want to retain the older style dash so i believe that i am restricted to using only 1996 donors. To anyone who has done this swap is it easier to use a grand Cherokee or Dakota donor? because the Dakota is somewhat similar to the Comanche/Cherokee it seems like it might be easier as far as getting the dash and pcm to communicate and getting the interior components to work, like HVAC, lighting, and audio. I have a rough idea of how indepth, time-consuming, and intensive this swap is and have read through the few write ups there are on this, but i also know that there is a lot that i am missing or havent thought of, so any input would be very much appreciated.

For the year and a half ive had it i have never seen the correct year xj or mj with a 4.0 in a junkyard around me, or if i have i haven't seen one that has a harness that is any better shape than mine. and i have wanted to keep it more of less original but the truck needs to be rewired. Every harness on the truck has been poorly hacked, spliced, and cobbed together by the previous owners to the point that it would have to be stripped out and rebuilt to really fix the issues. So at that point, as much as i do like the renix system it seems to make more sense to me to change up to a system that gives data and feedback and has parts more readily available
-
That's unfortunately what I was guessing it was going to be
-
Or if anyone has used the older style dash with the 97+system
-
Already started looking into that harness since I have a spare rear harness that I bought, but changing all of the other wiring was part of the reasons for considering the swap. I was hoping to hear from some of the people that did the 97+ to see why they went with that option
-
Fuel tank leaks too so I could get a spectra tank and the xj sender should work. I have a few sources for cheap xj parts either through friends or Craigslist it's just figuring out which direction to go with it that I have to figure out, which is why I want to get some input from others on here
-
I'm not a fan of the 97+ set ups if I went with the obd 2 it would probably be the 96 because i would be able to retain the same style dash and have have the data that obd2 gives. I could be wrong but i think the only major difference in the columns is that the 96 had an airbag so I wouldn't necessarily have to change the column. And the harnesses have been hacked up and "fixed" to the point of needing new ones and I've had zero luck finding a engine harness that is in good enough shape for me to justify spending the money No carb for me, it would go crazy being in CNY and multi port is way more efficient

I have a 88 4.0 5 speed that ive had for a little over a year and a half now that has been plagued with electrical problem after problem due to poor fixes from the previous owners. After doing some searching here and on some other sites, converting to either an obd 1 or obd2 system is sounding like a better option than trying to continue to patch the system or search for a harness that is in better shape. i like the obd set ups better because they give more outputs for data and the availability of parts over the renix. Any input would be appreciated thanks so my questions are : 1. what is a better option obd1 or obd2 as far as performance and efficiency 2. would anyone that has done this say that it is worth it 3. for obd 2 is 96 better than 97?

Thanks for the suggestion it definitely helped

Ended up pulling the pump and sure enough the line from the pump to the sender was partially off on the sender side. Put it back on with some better clamps and it's running and driving again
-
Added note pressure was just tested, 20-23 psi at the rail and unplugging the regulator does nothibg. Fuel pressure bleeds down to 0 fairly quick after the pump is turned off
-
forgot to add in i tested the fuel pressure when i tested the cps it was 31 with regulator plugged in 39 with the regulator unplugged

Well i could use some help, last night on my way back to school my jeep died completely and had to be towed. it drove just fine for about 25-30 miles than right after 1 of many hills it started to misfire like crazy when in gear and under basically any load it would bog down and almost stall if i didnt disengage the clutch. i limped it into a town and it died completely and started checking everything i could, Relay for fuel pump was bad, swapped it and it started and would idle but poorly and would still misfire and almost stall when in a gear. i had checked the cps 2 days before and it had an AC output of 0.56 V. Bosh Fuel pump was new less than a month ago Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all less than a year old Pulled exhaust off after the intermediate pipe still ran the same Throttle body is less than 6 months old Exhaust/Intake gasket and Exhaust manifold less than 6 months any ideas what I'm missing or what it could be that is causing it would be appriciated
-
They are both leaking, whoever had the pump out before me kind of mangled the seat for the locking ring and gasket so I can't get that to seal, but it's also leaking on the seam of the tank about 90ish degrees from the pump
-
Yeah it's a renix. 88 shortbed 4.0 sorry I keep forgetting to put that in a signature. But my tank leaks past about 1\2 to 3\4 full so I need to replace it and I figure I might as well but a more accurate sending unit and gauge instead of guessing where it's at, and was curious if anyone had used anything other than a cherokee or comanche sender in the aftermarket tank
-
Not sure if this has been answered on here or not, but can an aftermarket fuel sender Work with the stock or spectra fuel tanks?
-
hi, just wondering if the 1988 4.0 wiring harness and a harness from a 86 4.0 would be the same. The previous owner hacked up the harnesses on my 88 and I'm getting tired trying to fix his mess, there is a 86 being parted out semi close to me and i would like to get the harnesses if i can use them thanks
-
Hi all, wondering if anyone has found an aftermarket fuel sender that works without to much extra effort. i have the typical non accurate fuel gauge and the tank has started leaking (locking ring gasket) so i figure it might be worth the effort to put a new sender and maybe a new gauge ( intellitronix or maxglow) since the previous owner hacked the wiring up so much. Any input about how much of a headache this will be or what anyone has done already would be appreciated, thanks. truck is an 88 longbed 4.0 with i think the 18 gallon tank.

Missing power steering bolts?

Hornbrod thanks for the info. Tried ordering another collar from zmjeep and it said couldn't ship items in cart for some reason. -
Missing power steering bolts?
Jaxso32 replied to Jaxso32's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Up until recently the junkyard I go to had a pretty good stock of early to mid 90s Xjs. Most that are left either have had the engine or power steering pump pulled already I think there might have been one maybe 2 others left there? But hopefully I can get the bolt out of the original one so I can have tension on the belt -

Was going to the junkyard anyways today so I grabbed one of the collars and bolts got home and took mine apart turns out it had the collar the bolt was just broken off. Switched em out went to tighten it down and I think the junkyard one split. I'll find out tomorrow if I can get the broken bolt out of the other one hopefully I can or back to the junkyard I guess -
1988 mj pioneer 4.0 5 speed. Just did the serpintine belt and came across an issue... I noticed that 2 of the bolts on the power steering pump were missing. The long one that is supposed to be a tensioner and the lower of the 2 in the back? Could someone please tell me what size bolts these are? And any way I could tension the belt while I wait to get new bolts.
