Let me guess you put both them in a Comanche. A twin Rolls-Royce powered manche. Now that be something.

Well, fellow Jeepers found out today that you need to have two rear facing mirrors if you are driving doorless the rear-view mirror isn't enough in the state of New York or on Fort Drum. So this was my quick fix 5 dollar take on, take off, a mirror at auto zone. Sticks right inside the window. The other pic is... be jealous a cast steel battery tray. No more plastic, breakable tray when it's so cold out. Plastic is so bad when cold. Custom to fix that nasty little cavity that we have to deal with. Should look nice once painted. My battery will stop rubbing against my alternator now!

Sure Boardman I would like to see them. FYI the tint on mine didn't last the headlights were to hot and the tint just flaked off.

Found this today and couldn't stop watching it over and over.

Not having much luck might have to let this donor go. :( Found this in the hours of scanning the web for options. http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/712564--jeep-ax15-adapter-plate-kit-to-the-jeep-ax5-bell-housing-w-internal-slave-cylinder-replacing-ax5/

Looking for a parts from a Dodge Dakota 96-98,99 dakota bellhousing from a 2.5 an ax15 from a dakota 2.5. Or a AX5 for a 2.5 AX5 Putting some feelers out there. I know some of you have done the 2.5 to 4.0 swap what you do with you AX5? I want it. Lol.

WELL it's been a while. I have not updated this thread. One of the nice things is you can always come back to your thread and keep updating it. I have done lots to the Comanche. I don't have pictures so I'll just list some of the things. Posting on our one year anniversary! I have owned Jill for a year. Hard to believe she was abandon when I got her. ;) - Throttle cable replaced - Winterized package including full undercoat (now that she is a northern truck this was a must) - new oil pan for the 2.5 I put in - Comanche club sticker - new battery tray made of steel - 6 KC lights installed and wired - custom painted stone guards - new parking lights - new headlights - Comanche decals on doors from Jeepstickers. Love them great person to work with. - new side markers - A LOT of wiring - New front bumper (nates 4x4) - I would not go with them again. Only pictures I have. Very open to opinions. :P I am not sure if I like the look yet. I turned out interesting to say the least... Thoughts? Also I bought a donor for Jill and name it Jane. So now I have two jeeps (I am going to the dark side slowly) Does the fever ever stop? I pick it up this weekend. I bought it for 4-wheel drive. I have no idea how its going to work but I have heard the saying if you throw enough time and money at it eventually it will work. Lol. Donor is a 98 XJ automatic. With a 150 k on it. 3.55 gears. If anyone has an AX5 or an AX15 with a dodge dakota bell housing from 96-98 I would be very interested.

Engine is missing from the donor. :D

Well I didn't get a lot of positive feedback on this. But here is what I did with mine. Maybe this will interest you? I am in the process of installing it all right now. I went to auto zone and picked up a spray can of tint if you need the exact name let me know. So far it's been really good for the marker/turn lights and parking lights not so good on the headlights. The cool thing about this paint is with some rubbing alcohol it comes right off so you can redo it or take it off if you don't like it. I redid mine twice to get the look I wanted. I wanted to have a look like the Thunderchief. If you find something better than this Please let me know I have been looking for good options for a while I can post what mine looks like when I finish if you want. The only other idea I had was to separte the lights with a heat gun and paint the insides black and then glue them back together. I have not done this though. Let me know your thoughts.

O shoot. So you don't think that donor has 3.55s? I have not seen it personally. I will ask him to send my a picture of the gear ratio. He told me that this 98 XJ 4.0 liter 6 cylinder auto had 3.55 it's not a manual it's an automatic so wouldn't it have 3.55 and not 3.07s? Regardless that makes me nervous I will have him send me a picture. This donor is an Automatic and not a manual. "Or, if you're looking for a donor front axle to match the rear you already have in it, then going with an AX5 or AX15 still won't be very much fun with 3.55s" Why do you say that? I am just curious. Mine is currently a 4 speed 2.5L two wheel drive.
-
Nope I have no AX15 but will start to look for one. Gosh so I will have to modify the drive shafts. Hmm this is a more complicated problem than I thought.
-
Okay so to make it a successful swap. For these two. I would need. From the XJ donor -front axle -transmission -t-case -shifter linkage -front driveshaft -rear driveshaft From some dakota in a junkyard yet to be found. 96-98,99 dakota bellhousing from a 2.5 an ax15 from a dakota 2.5. If I have those parts I should be golden for the swap correct? OR I could From the XJ donor -front axle -transmission -t-case -shifter linkage -front driveshaft -rear driveshaft Junkyard find an -Find an AX5 This would also work for a complete swap correct?
-
Could I use a AX15 if the bell housing was swapped? Maybe it would bolt up? I say this because I've seen it discussed about using an AX15 on the 2.5 as a better choice of transmission when the AX5 craps out. The only issue being the output is different so that it is easiest to use the AX15 and it's mating transfer case to avoid the problem with the output shaft being different? Would this work? Or am I just talking silly?
-
Since mine is currently a 4 speed wouldn't I need a AX4 not a AX5?
-
So a AX5 then. Not a AX15. Those are not easy to find are they? Anything else? Or should I keep searching. This 2.5 4 speed makes things difficult part/swap wise.
-
So I have to find a ax15 then to make it work? Anything else I would need?
-
Also I was thinking of offering 350 for the donor is that about right price wise for the parts I want?
-
Okay I know this topic is lurking about but I wanted to get commanche approval before I go ahead and waste a lot of cash. My rig is 2 wheel drive it's driving me up a wall. I found a donor tonight for a great price. I have been searching forever. The donor is a 98 XJ automatic with 3.55 gears. straight 6 4.0 liter. My rig is a two wheel drive Comanche 88 4 speed. 3.55 gears 2.5 liter. ALL I would need for this swap is: -front axle -transmission -t-case -shifter linkage -front driveshaft -rear driveshaft Should be a pretty straight forward swap? I shouldn't need anything else right? I am a newbie soooo I don't really know. Or am I looking at hell in a hand basket on this one. My skill level to give you a good idea is well... it took me 3 days to swap a rear end out and I almost pulled my all my hair out doing it. How much harder would this be? Would I be pulling my own teeth to try and accomplish it? Let me know thanks! -Clark

^ lucky dog. I love those pictures on Facebook. I look at them more than I should. Being that the only one it makes it the holy grail of Comanches. :D
-
The good news is it is a certain sort of paint that with a little rubbing alcohol it comes right off. I tested it. But I figure if it's reversible why not see what it looks like. I wanted to go for a look like the holy grail of Comanches the Thunder Chief. Hoping it turns out something like this. Lol knew most of ya wouldn't like it too much. But I want to see how it turns out.
-
You and me really need to get together some time to do a front end swap for my manche. Love your work!
-
So somewhat related to my MJ. I did this today. I am not sure if it was a good idea. :brows: Soon to find out anyway. Thoughts. Yes I know it dims the light output.

So I have only been in New York for about a few months here in the Fort Drum area. But one thing I always like to find is a great Jeep club. So far this one has been really great and active. Better than the last few I have been in. Their events are fun. If any of you are in the area or more west of me like Buffalo. Maybe you would enjoy joining us. So far I think I am the only Comanche in the group out of a lot of Jeeps and I need a friend to help me tackle the task to let all XJ owners know that the MJ is better. The facebook group is: Wicked Jeeps Western New York If you are in Watertown or Fort Drum area we are doing a meet and greet tomorrow at 5 guys at 6. Other than that some really great events are coming up in New York, with the group, check them out on FB.

:agree: I pulled mine from a junkyard complete with hardware for a little over 10.00. Be very careful and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. So got this message a little late.... Yep busted off one of the nuts and bolt. Can I still do it with 2 screw instead of three? Or should I just drill a new hole? How should I proceed on this. I feel like I always have to learn the hard way.... LOL. The one that busted was the front one. The two in the back are still good. Advice? :brows:

Wow that is nice but pricey for just a battery tray. Any cheaper options otherwise I will probably go with this. Thank you for linking that!
