  1. Ok so after going around with parts counter guys, there is supposed to be a bearing there. But of course none of them can get it for me, does anyone know where I can get an upper steering bearing? I really don't want to replace the column if I don't have to
  2. Disassembled again just now, I am probably wrong but I really feel like a bearing right here would fix this issue. Why else would the previous owner have gouged this up?
  3. This is on a comanche that I'm not driving right now, so no worries there, trying to get it ready for a salvage inspection. I am going to replace the nut today, I don't seem to be missing anything else, at least it seems that way so far. If the nut doesn't tighten it all done properly are there bearings somewhere that could be allowing this slop? Steering shaft ujoints? What could this be? This is the only thing that is holding me back from passing a salvage inspection, I need to get this thing to pass so I can plate/insure it and start to do the 4wd conversion. Any ideas?? Maybe even an exploded view of the MJ tilt column, or even ideas of what I should do if the column needs replaced, as it is a column shift so I would think I will be hard to find a junkyard replacement, even though my budget dictates junkyard replacements as much as possible.
  4. So I have a 90MJ and it has the tilt wheel and column shift. There is noticeable slop, I'm talking about 1" in all directions. After some research I thought it was worth a shot to try and get to the bolts that hold the tilt tight, even though my slop seems to be at the wheel and not at the tilt. I ended up not using a steering wheel puller, as I am sure that a few parts are missing. After taking everything apart I found the inverted torx bolts tight and in no need of tightening. I followed this writeup: http://m.cherokeeforum.com/showthread.php?t=13641&styleid=15 In the first picture there is clearly the 13/16 nut that should be holding the steering wheel on and tight against the shaft. I am missing that nut. Any chance that once I install a new nut, the slop at the wheel will disappear? Or do I need a new to me column?
  5. Wrapped them in electrical tape, they are now both snug and look great and work great.
  6. Thanks, I will go try the tape now
  7. So after fixing some wiring and replacing a fuse, I got all my interior lights working, now for the questions. How are/were these supposed to be retained into the b pillar plastics? Is there a way I can still mount these if they are broken or if I'm missing some parts?
  8. Just replaced the driveshaft u joints, valve cover gasket, ccv parts, changed oil and trans fluid, it seems like in the 100k mi the truck hS no one ever thought to change the oil. Tons of built up sludge under the valve cover, ending up spending an hour scrapping and vaccumming out the large pieces, it was so bad that both orifices had to be cleaned out with a chisel and hammer. On suggestion of a old car guru I know I subtracted one qt of oil and supplemented a qt trans fluid with plans to change weekly until it cleans up a bit more. Also I took some pics of the under body while I had it up on the lift, here is how clean this truck is:
  9. Checking back in after doing this job, so everyone knows the fittings pictured above do not work with the renix valve cover, I found this out half way through the job. I filed down the new fitting and used silicone to seal it back up properly. I am doing this temporary as I plan on swapping over my 95 valve cover when i start to tear into the 4wd swap.
  10. I am looking for a gauge cluster that doesn't have the idiot lights, I want to swap it into my new to me 90MJ. Would like one that had temp, volts, fuel, tach etc. Thanks.
  11. Well, tomorrow morning I am going to remove the valve cover and replace the existing parts with these + new grommets then using rubber hose to replace the existing brittle plastic pieces, I hope they will work out.
  12. So while going over my new comanche, I found that the po has really hacked together the front CCV line. When trying to investigate the hose 'repairs' the entire 90* fitting has broken and almost fell into the valve cover, I am planning on soonish replacing the entire valve cover with the one from my 95 XJ but I need to get the MJ road worthy and put it through the state salvage inspection before I can tear into the XJ. Is there any acceptable way to repair this such as putting a new fitting in the valve cover and just using rubber hose for now instead of the factory stuff? I have a few extra CCV fitting that I bought awhile ago for the XJ, if those will work?
  13. Funny you mention akron, I lived there for almost 10years during my youth. good to know there at others into Comanches that are semi local. So I'm still getting all my info sorted out and waiting for the state inspection before I really start swapping parts over. I am planning on leaving the renix engine in the comanche but using the trans and such from the XJ. My question at the moment is what external engine parts can be swapped over from the HO to the renix? I ask because on the XJ in the last year it has got a new water pump, alternator, thermostat housing, valve cover with reusable metal impregnated gasket, power steering lines, etc. Also when swapping over the front axle from the XJ, will I have to swap all the steering components over as well? (Tie rod, tie rod ends, track bar, sway bar, end links, stabilizer etc?) most are less than a year old on the XJ but if I could reuse what's on the MJ and save that time and then save the XJ parts are spares and future replacements that would save me some hassle.
  14. I did buy it off daveys, Drove down when he opened on Friday morning loaded it on the trailer and brought it home, as soon as I saw how clean it was it was a done deal for me. I am located in northfield.
  15. I very recently bought this 1990 2wd 4.0 AW4. It only has 100k on it, runs great and the best part is it appears to be rust free. I currently DD a 1995 4wd XJ, it's just really falling victim to ohio rust, so my current plan is to take the 4wd components out out of the XJ and swap them to the MJ. I have researched extensively yet but it seems like all that is involved to swap transmission, transfer case and associated linkages, front shaft, and front axle (not sure if that means steering and suspension parts need to be swapped, would love to keep as many MJ steering and suspension parts as it looks to be in better shape). I am interested in any info any of you have on improvements and parts that I can swap out of the cherokee or even junkyard XJs other than the 4wd parts, creature comfort parts essentially. Here are pics of the MJ and then the current DD and future parts donor XJ.
