Hi All, I have an 87' MJ with an inline 6 and a manual Puegot BA/10 5 tranny. I want to put the AX-15 in it. What years will work? I'm looking at one from a 96' Cherokee. Will that bolt up?
-
Thanks all,... I'll try to get some better pics up,... after she gets a bath. This MJ will be pampered. I plan to keep her for a long time. As for whats next I hope to get my hands on an AX-15 and rebuild over the Winter. Never tore into a tranny before should be interesting. The BA/10-5 has got to go, it's working ok now but it's just a matter of time before that Frenchie fails. Long term, I'd like to find an Eagle SX4 to rebuild,....

If get rid of the valve in the back could that solve my problem? Just run a straight line? If I do that will it affect my stopping power while under load or towing a boat?
-
I don't think those rear brakes have worked for quite a while,... just haven't gotten around to it. Figured it was stopping pretty well I'll play with them later. The near fender bender put it up towards the top of list though. That and the E-brake can't stop a stiff breeze. I did try the star wheel,..... cranked on it for a while,.... no effect. the main brake will not stop the rear wheels either. jacked up the back started the truck in neutral, stomped on the main brakes and the rear wheels could still be turned by hand. Bled the lines,... no effect :dunno:

Replaced everything in the rear, New seals, bearings, backing plates, drum kit, shoes, rotors, brake lines ect ect ect. original master cyc front valve, and the thing in the back,.... height or load valve I think. So I had a panic stop a few days back,... notice the truck took a bit more distance to to stop than I feel comfortable with. My Ebrake needed adjusting anyway so we took a look at it. Jacked up the back, adjusted the cable for the Ebrake on the bracket under the bed and with the little metal wheels inside the backing plate. Wheels still turn with a bit of effort,... this with the Ebrake to the floor. So tried the main brake,.... same result. The wheels spin with the same resistance or lack there of  Bled the line,... a little air in there. Started the truck to get the booster/vacuum going. No good,... wheels can be turned by hand without a lot of effort. More difficult to turn them backwards than forwards. :hmm: I'm stuck,... don't know what else to try here. Bad valve somewhere?

It's been nearly a year since I posted. I finished my re-build last October,....mostly. My appologies for not keeping up with the pics and the progress. Could not have done it without all the excellent write ups and help I got from this sight. I've got a problem again and need some more help. First I'll pay up and post the (mostly) fininished product. Myself and a buddy did all of the body work and some of the priming. Brought it to a good local painter for the rest of it,...$$$$ ouch. Came out pretty good though. Found a guy up in Canada to make me the the strips and "SporTruck" stickers. I still need to go out and do a nice photo shoot. This is the only pic I have after I put it on the road again this past Spring. Since I've put a 1" lift and 30" treds, and a spray in bedliner. Going mostly for a factory look here. I even found some original AMC logos while on vacation in FL. I put one on the tailgate and one each under the Comanche logo on the front quarter panels. The pic above is out camping and windsurfin' at a local State park. This is mostly why I rebuilt it, to carry my toys around and look shiny. Let me know what you think I'll be posting my questions in Tech.

Thanks Pete, thats a bit more reassuring. Your right about the spline, I counted both of them a few months ago and they were both 21. I'll have to check that spline length though, I have a feeling they're different. I'll know more tomorrow, should have time to compare them. Gears ratios in the truck I'm trying to repair is 3.55; gears from the other rig (shot frame) is 3.07
-
Your right on that  I thought it was odd they were spinning in opposite directions. Glad to hear thats supposed to happen as I don't have a locker. The drive shaft wasn't moving though,... is that normal to?
-
I just destroyed my rear bearing, axle shaft came right out the side of the truck. The part that really has me concerned is the T-case, I think it was damaged as well. When it's up on stands and in gear I can spin the rear wheels freely,....not good. I have another T-case but am not sure if it will work. The busted T-case: 87 4.0 with a 5 speed BA10/5 tranny The one that works: 87 2.5 with a 4 speed Aisin tranny Can I swap this T-case in? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Long while since an update,... July has been tough to get much done :( Got the new motor and put it in. Got the 4.0 computer, harness & instrument cluster in as well as well. Re-did my headliner to. More pieces-parts bolted up to. Got some fancy injectors from Five-O :brows:
-
Anyone know how to get these out? I need to put them in the new motor I got coming. I yanked everything off & out of the way. The injectors seem like they're stuck in there. they're lose but just spin around. Very frustrating.

Sorry, that's party why I got the donor, I wanted those buckets to. The driver's side mounting bracket is all rotted out. I have to find a new one some where my self. I'm about to post on the classifieds to see if anyone has one. Good luck with your bucket seat hunt. They're a bit tough to find.

Been a while since I posted but got the donor in and started tearing it apart. Bundled up the keeper for a while but just her back in the garage a couple days ago. Here are some new pics: Snapped a pic of one of the holes, ain't she a beaut? Ate a lot rust pulling parts of this rig. Few shards in the eyes to, always fun. Taking a little break for the next couple weeks, 4th of July parties and such, there's lots of burgers, dogs & beer that needs be et & drank.

All done with the undercarriage/frame, axle. Cleaning up the metal, POR-15, and painting took longer than I thought. Got the new rear shocks in, will try to tie up the front springs and shocks today.
-
Anyone know which of these I'm supposed to count to figure out my gear ratio? This truck was originally a 2.5 manual 4 speed. I've heard these were 3.55's but I'd like to verify. What do I do (math wise) when I have my counts?
-
Got the underside and frame done. Finally got the new axle seals, bearings, and collar pressed on and back in the D35. :clapping: Also new Drum brake hardware, shoes, and got the drums turned. Good time to change out the gear oil. Hope to have this one button upped, prepped, and out the door by next weekend; so I can get the donor in to pilfer the parts I need off it. Will post more pics as soon as I can.

Awesome info thanks guys. Both trucks are 87's and using the Renix system. So according to Comanchedude I'm all set on the dash harness :clapping: I really don't want to tear into that dash if I don't have to. So I pulled the 2.5's computer and harness out as you said. As you can see in the background I purchased some beer to appease the Manche Gods here on the forum. I'll yank the one out of the donor within the next few days and put it in. How about all of this stuff? :hmm: The wire harness I pulled was connected to these, I think they're relays and maybe ignition coil? :dunno: then it goes on to another harness that hits all the front light stuff and continues around the engine compartment and back in through the firewall into the fuse panel.
-
Is this the Renix computer? I'm getting ready to put the 4.0 in (previously a 2.5) are the computers the same? I'm worried it won't fire the injectors correctly.
-
Sure did, I gotta thank you for that one Wildman, that worked out real nice. It's a while since I been on the site, we've done a bunch of work. And I of course have Q's to post in the Tech section. Anyway here are the latest pics: Had to take it outside to de-grease the undercarriage. Many years of bar and chain oil sprayed on the frame and panels. It's messy but it's why she's stills here. I sprayed it with degreaser and crawled under it and went to town with the pressure washer. Had to do it before we got under there with angle grinders and welders, would have caught the whole thing a fire. Pretty much done on the floor pans and undercoatings, just a bit of painting to do. Went to replace the backing plates and found leaky axle seals. Seals and new bearings just came in. Should have them back in the axle some time this week.

Just pulled everything out of my MJ. Getting ready to put the donor's motor in. Problem is the donor has the ba10/5, I've got my eye on a couple AX-15's just sitting around. I'm waiting to hear if they're 94' or newer, hoping to get an external slave type. The question is this: I just pulled the Transfer case from my 2.5 four speed manual. Will that T-case work with a 94' or newer AX-15 tranny? Or,... If I stay with the Donor's ba10/5 tranny will my T-case work with that? Here's the T-case I just yanked:

Hi all, it seems a while back someone did a post or a link which broke down all the specs of the various MJ's. Anyone still have that or know where I can find it? I printed it out a few months ago but lost it. Can't seem to come across the right search words to bring it back up. :hmm: It was somewhat general stuff, like what they had for motors, trannies, axles, gear ratios,....ect.

10/4 thanks Pete

Well finally got the T-Case, engine, and tranny out a couple days ago :D . The prep work took a bit longer than expected, more stuff to pull out than I thought. Should be fun putting it all back together. Got all the old fuel and brake lines out only to find more rust and holes hiding underneath. I got a new driver side floor pan on order. I need some suggestions on shocks, I'd like to get them in while the bed and engine are out of the way. Looking for a decent set, I won't be wheeling much if at all so ride is important. For now I'm just going to run 31's on it, will stock size shocks be long enough?

Oh yea, Thats the easiest way to pull then :D First one I pulled, I took the tranny off :fs1: Ever one after that, I pulled the engine with the tranny and transfer bolted together. I know your dealing with a 2.5, but, a 4.0 with an AW4 and NP231 bolted together is 6'-7" long  I got the thing half way out, and had to push the truck out the shop door to finish pulling it........ran out of room in the shop :rotfl2: Now I got a bigger shop, so thats not a problem anymore :brows: Just unhook everything, like fuel lines, and wire harness's and support the tranny, remove the cross member and tranny mount. Take off the entire front end, header panel, radiator support, loosen up the engine mounts off the frame, and of course a few other odds and ends, and the real trick is to have a leveler on the hoist, drop the tranny down and pull away :D Yea, salt does its tole on us around here, but, there are still some good solid MJ's in this area. Thanks! really great tips,... I didn't even think about running out room when I pull that engine and tranny out. I'll have to turn it around and push it out the door while I'm yanking it out. You just saved me a bunch of aggravation. :clapping: Looks like I'll be doing the Manche shuffle this weekend. Sounds like you got a sweet shop to have that kind of room. Got the exhaust, bed, and a few more parts off this weekend. Not as much work done as I hoped. Had to box in my vegetable garden and got two loads of dirt with the parts runner. She's ugly but back on the road and working,... steering is funny. I think it needs a new pitman arm. I'd rather work on the MJ though. Here's some updated pics of where I'm at with the MJ. Speaking of wire harness can I use the 2.5's? it has dummy lights. The donor has gauges and I want to put that cluster in. Is it simply a matter of plugging in a couple unused plugs to get the 4.0's motor and gauge cluster to work? :dunno: Or will I need to pull all that wiring out?
