  1. sprayed my test fender came out nice, some more work to do on the other fenders and they are ready for primer weatherr looking bad for the week so not painting until next weekend. sorry no pics forgot batteries again :wall:
  2. The taping part isnt a problem being a house painter I do use tape a lot , (I bought some nice 3m tape to work with) when I use oil based paints I know to take time to peel it. I just bought a new hvlp gun and new compressor so I will definitely practice and make note on pressure , my old compressor can't handle the hvlp the new one should be good, As soon as the rain stops around here I'm going to try it if I do a crappy job a friend that paints cars will help me next weekend, unfortunately he isnt much help explaining lol. I decided on using a gray primer and most likely a 1969 Hemi Orange, going to paint the junk fender and put it on the MJ to see how it looks. Once I do I will post pics, I'm using a 1 stage Dupont paint, since I'm not experienced with auto paint I don't want to mess with laying on a clear coat, probally going to let a pro clear the mj after I finish.
  3. is it worth under coating the insides of the doors and fenders? I am priming them but after tossing and turning last night I don't know if it's worth it I could also rhino line it. What I mean by inside doors is not the interior but inside the window track area.
  4. Thanks I do have a junk fender to practice on I will take my time I want it to look good hopefully it comes out good or Macco it goes. I did look at your topic that came out real nice, can't wait to see it with the 302 in it.
  5. Any tips for some one who hasn't sprayed a car yet? I bought a good compressor moisture trap, cup gun, I am a hose painter by trade and do spray but a car is different, no need to worry about taping most panels will be off and stripped so I can get inside outside all same color I will be paint factory style pin stripes in probably a flat black, the finish color is most likely going to be a 1969 Hemi-Orange so keeping with a Hemi paint scheme, down to 4 different orange colors to choose from. Should I paint the pin stripe first, it's the one the factory put on so its a wide pin stripe I guess. Should I use tape or vinyl ( like sign makes use) and I am adding the "pioneer" back on the lower rear fender. How many coats should I put on?
  6. Started sanding the fenders, I need to buy a sand blaster but no funds so slow going with power tools, I found more rust under the tight paint, I am pricing new fenders tomorrow not sure what to do yet. I also found a color I'm getting mixed atm when the rain lets up I will prime and paint the junk fender to see how it comes out and looks. Pics coming shortly camera needs batteries keep forgetting to buy them.
  7. Is there a shackle out there that can be used as stock up to 3" or not I can not find one. not sure if I'm going 2-3" or not yet, but mine are rotted out and need to be replaced any ways. in time I want to do a soa and do not want to replace the shackles again thats why I need stock to 3".
  8. Tore the fenders off yesterday, cut fenders, found so much more rust under the flares I ground it all down primed the bare metal now I decided to strip the clear coat and paint and start with clean metal, just bought new cup gun, I'm a house painter and do spray houses but I know spraying body panels is different so thank god for junk panels practice and see how it looks. I do not know what color to go with some thing in the orange line but it has to stand out and not a common orange color, I saw a few I liked but do not know the names or code # What I decide will be on a black primer, as painters know the primer will make a difference in the color dark primer deeper darker look, lighter primer lightens the color look especially with candy/pearl paints. I took pics of work I did but batteries died so will post pics this weekend. As long as the rain holds off I am going to start tearing the front axle out, might need to hold off until my brothers race car moved out of the garage thing. I decided to use spacers up front 2-3" and shackels out back (since there rotting away might as well). Is there a shackle out there that can be used as stock up to 3" or not I can not find one.
  9. What is the best way to cut my fenders, I don't have that many tools and where abouts should I cut it at the bend? and how about the back of the fender any cutting or modifying to be done? I looked at some pics in the mexican mj thread so I have an idea where to cut. also what do I do with that little tray behind the bumper. Body work is not my thing but I do have 2 fenders that are junk to practice on first.
  10. This week I am taking the front end off for the 5th time, this time it's to trim the fenders also to fix that trim panel under the wipers not sure what it's called, taking the doors off to repair the bottom edge before it starts rotting.
  11. got bored so I went to my XJ and took off the front receiver hitch and winch and sway bar, as you can see the front end is extremely rusty but believe it or not the bolts all come out easy unlike my XJ broke 4 out of 6 bolts oops. I didn't change the sway bar yet ordered all new parts a few minutes ago.
  12. Thanks Looks can be deceiving lol, actually the quad was a bonus from my boss for 15 yrs working with him, he had it but didnt ride it for 5 yrs so he let me take it I know nice boss. Today I bought the rest of the exhaust pipe I needed installed it so from manifold to tail pipe is new, new shocks, 1 took 2 hrs to replace bolts were destroyed. Picked up 1 gallon of primer getting ready to sand down the bad spots then during the week hoping to get it primed. Still lots of under carriage work to do as long as funds allow it I'm doing little by little.
  13. Planniing on soa as soon as funds allow, going to do custom exhaust, repaint some sort of orange, will be up dating pics weekly or as I work on it, it will be a DD so not going to crazy yet.
  14. here is a pic of when I bought it up untill last weekend. Stock height with 32x10.50x15 wrangler rims. a few links of all work done since I bought it. lots of pics.
  15. Hi all this is my MJ I bought it a few months age, the bed was rotted really bad I ended up cutting out the rot and re built it (well my brother did I watched lol) I have owned an XJ for the past 11 yrs and am to the point I'm done fixing it (blown up tranny, fromt end need complete rebuild) so I'm going to put all my time and cash into the MJ. It is a 1989 4.0l auto with 85k original mi 6' bed, it is stock height with worn suspension but I still put my 32x10.50.15 on it, I only had to trim the flares and it doesnt rub the fenders but hits full lock, I have spacers on my XJ just need to get them off., the interior is really clean the body and under carriage is a different story it look like it went swiming in the ocean, I just started today stripping the XJ and hope to strip it clean in a week or 2.
