To get everything to clear the steering box I bought a bracket kit to move the alternator up top and place the steering pump right under it. I eventually ended up using the accessories and brackets that place the belt closest to the engine, which I think is the C5 spacing.

Only had to slide the engine in twice. I set it as far back as the Novak mounts would allow, which required some sledge hammer persuasion in a couple of places. The Novak mounts worked pretty well besides getting the carriage bolts to seat properly.

For the LS1 I pulled the pan off, changed the timing chain, oil pump, cleaned what I could, etc. Put on one of those oil pick up brackets that actually uses both bolts to secure the oil pick up. Engine side motor mounts. Got this to run oil pressure and oil temperature sensors.

I was able to get the Camaro transmission shifter to work. I just had to rotate it up 90 degrees to clear the driveshaft. Here you can see the bracket I built to move it up. With some trimming for the transfer case shift levers I was also able to use the Camaro center console. Unfortunately it still smells like Axe body spray even after multiple rounds of cleaning.

I put a large cooler with fan on the transmission. Along with a bunch of fancy AN lines. I also run two transmission temperature sensors.

A lot of this stuff probably isn't happening in perfect chronological order. This was years ago and there were dozens of things all going on simultaneously.

I separated the transmission and dropped it off to have it rebuilt with the Novak parts. Put on a fancy pan. The transmission mount I ended up with.

I had already been collecting parts for the swap. Lots of it from Novak. Motor mounts Headers Transmission tail housing, output shaft, and mount (which did not work).

This project sat around for a few years. At this point I had picked up a Samurai and having a blast wheeling the crap out of it. By 2019 our club planned a trip to the Rubicon and Fordyce Creek and I wanted to take the MJ. In February 2019 it was time to rip out all the good stuff out of the crappy party Camaro.

Kick @$$! The pics have returned! Thank you Comanche Club! I wish nothing but the worst for Photobucket. I hope to have some updates on this project in the relatively near feature. Willy

Right now it is just bolted to the floor. The front feet land right on top of the front bed mounts and straddle the horizontal rib running underneath the bed. I've got some ideas on boxing in the bed mount and tying the feet into the frame, just haven't had time to do it. Willy

Check out page 29, post 571. I welded those plates to the area below the A pillar and behind the fenders. The front feet of the cage land on those plates. There are some other pics on that page with the cage bolted to it. Willy

My '89 Comanche - Getting an LS2
reson46 replied to Korsch_RS's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Great! I noticed the hole in your pic and I was hoping it was for the VSS. The pic on the Novak site appears to show a VSS in the collection of parts, but it isn't listed in the contents. Thanks, Willy- 117 replies

My '89 Comanche - Getting an LS2

Is this the tail housing you used? https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/adapters/transmission-to-transfer-case/4l60e-to/kit-4l61/ I was wondering if it came with a mounting location for the VSS? It isn't clear on the Novak site. Thanks, Willy- 117 replies

Looking forward to this. Interested in what parts you used. I am guessing those are the Novak swap headers? Willy- 117 replies

I will keep that in mind, but I am guessing those are probably not easy or cheap to come by at this time. I will probably go with the Novak conversion headers just to keep it simple. Maybe I will have to add that to my Craigslist searching..... Willy

You are more than welcome to join us on a run or a club meeting. We meet the second Thursday of every month. Usually at the Summit library off 512 and Canyon Road. We do a good job of keeping the calendar on our website up to date too - http://cascade4x4s.com. Willy

No, I am going to use the same dual 231 cases. The transmission will be rebuilt with a 4WD tail housing. Most likely from Novak to convert it to the six bolt Jeep pattern. Willy Speaking of 231 doubler, how has your setup been for you? I dunno why, because I rarely go out but I've been looking at getting a toyota xtra cab to make into a wheeler, parts are cheapish and I want more room. Nobody wants to pay what I'm asking for the mj and I'll lose my butt so I'm browsing 231 doubler optionsSent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk For the price I am very happy. The only thing that would be nice is if one of the cases had a lower low range. It would be nice to choose from 2.72, somewhere in the 4.0 range, and double low. Willy
