Can you access inside the frame rails if the floor pans are cut out?
-
All cleaned out now! Time to start be building this side.

Rain finally stopped long enough for me to get back to work. Started on the drivers side frame rail, it's the better of the two. Cut out from the front spring hanger to about midway to the transfer case. Was I surprised what fell out! The rail was over half full of sand, dirt, mud... Perfect recipe for disaster.

'87 Comanche door swapping
turner-2000tj replied to Comanche 87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The XJ is the Jeep Cherokee, not the "Grand" but just regular Cherokee. The MJ (Comanche) is pretty much the same as an Xj from the doors forward. So, yes the doors, fenders, hood, grill, bumper will interchange. Your comanche being an 87 will accept XJ parts up till the 1997 model year. If you wanted the newer look of the 97 and up XJ some modifications are necessary. If I'm incorrect in any of this someone will be right along to correct me, but I think I'm right for the most part! Congrats on the MJ BTW! Got any pics of it? -

Going to try and get back on the rust repair tonight!
-
Took a break from rust treatment for a little bit over the weekend and wanted to make it a little prettier.
-
there are so few MJ's available in my area that this is as good as it gets. I could wait and see if a better one comes along, but I bet I see maybe 5 in a years time come up for sale.

After seeing how much rust it had I was torn if I should scrap it and buy another or fix this one. After consulting with fellow Comanche owners I've decided to just keep it and fix it. I started by cutting access holes in the top to clean out, treat and coat the inside of the frame rails. I then repeated the process on the outside. As you can see there are additional spots that need to be cut out and new steel welded in. I have yet to tackle the really bad spots.

It hasn't been on the streets for countless years, so the first order of business is to get it running, driving and stopping. A couple gallons of fresh gas and it fired right up! You can't keep a good Jeep down! completely new brake system and she stops pretty good as well. While doing the brake job I noticed a lot of frame rust. I knew it had a previous repair but missed just how bad it really is.

This will be my attempt at documenting the rebuilding, building and modifications of this new to me 1987 MJ. I've never been really good at taking "in process" pics but will try harder as time goes on. This is the first picture I have of it. More to come!

Going to start a build thread to document the repair and further mods! Calling this one The Phoenix, because I'm bringing it back from the dead!
-
well... I've searched the ole inner web, thought about it long and hard and I've come to the conclusion that I'm just going to fix it. Let the cutting begin!

Jim, where ya at?

I'd be interested in knowing what you have for sale. I really just need the shell but whatcha got?
-
Jim, Do you have an MJ for sale?
-
I have the tools and welding skill to fix it. Any one know what's the best way? Cut out the rust and just box it in or new tubing welded in? Also, who's Jim?

So, here's the deal. I got an 87 MJ for a really great price from a fella in the neighborhood. It's sat in his driveway for a long time. On day I stopped in and struck up a conversation about it. I ended up buying it that day. I took it home and got it running and stopping again. I knew it had some "frame" rust but didn't think it was as bad as it is. MJ's in my area are about as common as find a sack of money in the road... Here are pics h The rust runs all the way up to the tranny crossmember. What do you all think? Is she saveable?
