I had put the mobil 1 syntehtic in it, but was told that was no good. I was going by what I had read in a manual, but then found out about a misprint. So I've drained that oil out of the tranny, and I put it in the diffs. wasn't going to waste $30 in oil. I put regular dino 80-90W in it, I don't have anyplace that has the MT-90, so I've ordered it, but had to have it shipped ground. So it should be here next week sometime. I'm pretty sure my 2nd and 3rd gear syncros are toasted. I've been looking at rebuild kits and thinking about doing it myself. I started a thread in the tech forum
  2. so, now that I've determined what tranny I've got, and it is the AX-15 I need to get around to fixing the syncros before the gears are totally hosed. I've got weak syncros going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third. I've been matching RPMs, but sometimes it gets ugly. I've also got that nagging bearing noise and I think that's the input shaft bearing. I've gotten the Jeep component manual for the AX-15. I was considering a rebuild kit. They're cheap http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-85- ... dZViewItem How much of a task is this? I'm mechanically inclined, and pulling the tranny and putting it back in I'm pretty sure I could handle in a few hours. I've never been inside of a tranny though, and I don't have any special tools for it. Has anyone done this? Tell me theres a transmission guy in here. If I bought the parts how much do you think a tranny shop would rape me for?
  3. yes, I had read that GL-5 was ok for the tranny. But you and another person have already told me that the mobil 1 was no good in the AX-15, it is indeed a gl-5 oil. I drained it into a clean bucket and put it into the differentials. I replaced the oil in the tranny with regular 80-90w gear oil. I will order the Redline mt-90. No place around here carries it. So this is the 3rd time I've drained and filled that tranny, it ought to be clean now.
  4. will do. That kinda sucks. At $8 a quart sees a shame to waste. What's wrong with the mobil 1, just doesn't work? I'll capture it in a clean bucket and put it in my difs then. Is it ok o put in the diffs?

well it's been determined that I do in fact have an AX-15. I just also have the AX-15's odd shifting between 1st and second. I changed the tranny fluid today, it certainly seemed better. I still hear an odd noise whenever the clutch is out. I first thought it was the throwout bearing, but I'm starting to suspect the input shaft bearing more and more. THe sound of the noise changes based on wheel speed. I can coast the truck down a hill in gear with the clutch in and I hear the noise, so it must be something in the Tranny. I'll have to split them to find out. hopefully I can put a new input shaft bearing in the tranny without taking it apart, but I doubt that. I got the AX-15 service manual, so I've got to look that over. It's PDF if anyone wants a copy just head over to pirate4x4 and download it.
  6. Well, it's an AX-15 So I'm stoked. Looks like a PO did a whole driverain swap. I may even have an HO in there. I'm going to pull the valve over off tomorrow and find out. Today I did all the fluids, t-case, tranny and difs. I also did a full tuneup, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, rotor and cap. So now it's running real good. Mobil 1 synthetic solved most of the shifting nastiness. I need to fix the shifter, and I think I'll be squared away.
  7. oh that page is so bookmared. Now that I have that I think I can figure it out for sure now. Thanks Eagle.
  8. So, I'm fairly sure it's the puegot( thanks to you guys), but from the decriptions you've given me it just doesn't look like that to me. So either I'm a bit stupid here, ad that's possible, or a PO did a drivetrain swap. The motor doesn't look or run like it's got 242K miles on it, and the block and such are all painted. So it's possible, I have NO idea about the history of this truck other than what carfax gave me. So here's the pics and name my tranny! [/img]

Hey, I've got an 87 Pioneer, so we might becoe buddies, as I need lots o knowledge. :) CUrrently figuring out what to do with the puguet tranny. I think the syncros between 1,2 and 3 are pretty much shot. And the clutch throwout bearing or the input shaft are making noise. I'm leaning towards the input shaft, the tranny heats up something wicked.
  10. I'm in Ohio, so it's rained for a few days, but it's not that bad!
  11. well, I didn't pull the bolts since the shifter was broken, so I didn't see them. I'll just crwal under there and take a picture. It's not a big deal. This place is great!
  12. you know you were right. I took out the shifter and poured a galon of gear oil into it. A lot of the noise has gone away. The syncros in 2nd and 3rd are pretty much shot. I have to shift at set speeds to avoid gear chatter. About 10 MPH for 2nd, and 25 for 3rd. It still sounds like there's some bearing noise, prety sure it's a throwout bearing. Noise stops when I push the clutch in. It's either that or the input shaft bearing in the tranny. If I filled it thorugh the gear shift how full should I fill it? I filed it until it covered the shaft believe the shift linkage. Then I fixed the gear shift so it didn't pull out :) I plan on doin a proper fluid change in it this weekend, but right now it's my DD, so I just had to pour some in so I didn't wreck it. Also, I'm not so sure I have the puegot at this point. I read that the Puegot splits horizontally with a top andbottom half, this tranny doesn't look like that, so perhaps someone's already done it. That would be awesome. I'll snap some pictures of it this weekend while I'm chaning the fluid and we'l play guess my tranny. While I'm at it, where's the drain and fill plugs? and does anybody have any idea where I can get a service manual?
  13. I'm also looking at the same situation. I've got an 87 with the BA-10 and it's starting to fail. Notchy shifting, whining noise. If I happen to find a 92 MJ ax-15 will it bolt directly in? WOuld I need that 23 spline adapter?
  14. So, it's an 87 Comanche Pioneer. 4WD BA10/5 4.0L 242K miles Good body, some light surface rust Tranny's got some odd noises, hoping to get another 10K out of it and then replace it with an AX-15. On to the photos! http://www.flickr.com/photos/74249553@N00/ that's about the whole truck floorpans got some light rust, not swis chese though. Slave cylinder hasn't leaked onto the fuse box, so that's a plus.
