Speedometer cable pics

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I have made the mistake of not taking the speedo cable off of the donor vehicle when doing the cluster gauge swap and now I'm struggling part number. So far there have been 2 that are non cruise control

CA3068 - non-plastic clip one

CA3116 - plastic clip one.

I believe that CA3068 is the correct one, but I want to make sure. Can one of you guys that have the speedo cable on the back of your cluster (Renix from 86 to 89) take a picture of it plugged into the speedometer and unplugged from the speedometer (the speedometer connector end)

Any help would be appreciated guys!

Did you use the nut that is on one end? Can I see the picture of the back of your speedo with that plugged in by chance?

I don't have the original speedometer installed any more, the cable is still hanging on the body of the jeep because out of the sheet metal bolts that holds the clamp to the body stripped out, instead of cutting it out I left it.

I can get a picture of the ends of the cable tonight, the cluster is in a box somewhere, it broke years ago started clicking over every tenth of a mile was a mile, had like 400k on the cluster by the time I swapped it, didn't take that long, I think body of the jeep now has at least 350k miles but any real sense of milage was lost when the cluster went nuts.

Took this picture last time I looked at it

I'll get pictures of the cable tonight

Crap found a wasp nest behind the headlight . Don't drive this one right now cause I'm in the middle of the thirty year rebuild, guess I'm still piecing it together for the last two years. Now it's down to time got almost all the parts. Damn I've had this jeep for 20 years this October.... where did the time go?

Anyway I didn't think there was that big a difference between the style cables. I believe there was a clip on the speedometer I pressed to release it. I put the new cable in because the I think the old one was getting gittery and the lube didn't smooth it out. That and I found a 89-90 instrument cluster with full instrumentation to throw in. Turns out most of the speedometer problems are the np207 because of the stupid reverse gm speedometer gear they used. Even specialist shop don't carry them.

I don't remember a huge difference in the cable connections except maybe the new style has the clip built in and the old was on the speedometer. In fact I think I used the old metal speedometer cable on the first replacement cluster for a 87 with the idiot lights. Just pushed it in place I think.

I'll see if can find a picture of the back of the original cluster.

Only picture I've got is of the peeling circuit board with my fingers blocking the view of the back of the cluster, luckily found a example on eBay, it's off a 84 and it's a little hard to see but bottom right hand of the speedometer is the metal retainer I had to push to release the cable. It blends in so it is very hard to see. If you look you can also see this cluster has the printed circuit board separating like so many of the early 80s XJ clusters I found. I don't think I'll find another picture of the back unless dig up the original cluster out of storage. Hope this helps.

This is exactly what I needed to see! Thanks! Now I can go to FNJeep and get one. Supposedly they have a lot of those. Will see if the one i get works. Hopefully the lengths aren't different between 4.0s and whatever earlier models came with.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any mention of trucks equipped with cruise control.  I've seen quite a few of the early XJs/MJs with cruise, and there is a short cable that attaches to the instrument cluster, that includes a speed sensor, and that short cable then attaches to the speedo cable.  I could see if someone had an original speedo cable that was meant for cruise application, then bought a cluster, would have a hard time figuring out how it all went together because they were missing a piece.  Not sure if that helps any in this case, but thought I would mention it.

I heard that for those that have cruise control on them, go from the speedo to a module which then controls the cruise and from there to the transfer case. Not sure. But the above picture is what the back of my cluster looks like (pulled from the junkyard)

Turns out that for those the speedometer is mounting is actually different too. Went to junkyard to get just the speedo and turns out that it couldn't be mounted. And that clusted broke too. So the cluster ended up getting thrown away and i got another cluster from an 89 XJ it looks like. It has a 90+ gauges too (probably was swapped). Will have to cut the stopping pin for the reverse gear and hope it works. or does that not have to be done and its incorporated into the gauge? Previously if i reversed, the speedo went backwards

Welp, in the end, the gauge cluster I originally got ended up breaking. So it was stripped for parts and I got a 89 jeep XJ full gauge cluster and just used the original speedo cable. Everything works now and the gauges are from 90-96 model year. Next on the list will be to do all of the little things like windshield and wheels and tires.

Btw, there is a loose 4 prong connection on the driver side under the hood. Does anyone know what that it? there is also another 3 prong one (i think) near the throttle body. There are no wires to them to go anywhere so its probably for some "higher end" model. What are they??
