4.0 fuel pump in a 2.5

Recommended Posts

Found a 93 XJ, 2.5, 5 speed 4wd on CL for a friend for $300. It has a fuel delivery problem, and the guy I talked to is pretty sure it needs a new pump. I have a pump from a 92 4.0 XJ in my shed that worked when pulled.

Is it safe to run a 4.0 pump in a 2.5?

Is it ok to run a pump that's been sitting open in a garage/shed for 3 years?

According to my 91-93 parts manual the XJs all use the same fuel pump for these years. Put some inlet/outlet hoses on it into a bucket of gas, and give it a smoke test. Not going to say don't create a spark as I'm sure you already know what could happen. You can even run it backwards for a second or two to flush any crud out.

Alright, sounds good. I was thinking the 4.0s and 2.5s used different pump. Maybe I was thinking TBI and MPI?

For the bucket test, I'm assuming just setting the bucket next to the truck and use the wiring from the truck?

The exports (still using TBI) used a different pump, but if both your XJs are domestic, you should be golden.

I ASSuMEd your donor fuel pump was removed and sitting on a shelf? If so, just use a battery charger or your battery for a 12V power source and temp wire it up with the pump submerged in a bucket of fuel, discharge line to another container. Will not check pressure of course, but if it runs and pumps it should be okay to use. I did this w. an advertised NOS Bosch pump I got from Ebay (it was not), ran it both ways by reversing the polarity (it was crudded up), took a chance and installed it in the tank, and that was four years ago. Still going strong.
