88mj 4wd conversion info

Hey guys I'm new here and new to the mj world aswell! 
I just buy a 88/4.0/2wd manual SWB. I have done some search and it should be a ba10/5 transmission. I'm planning to make a 4wd conversion so i just picked up a 1998 xj with an ax15/np242 and hp dana30. As far as i know ill have to swap crossmember, shift likage and bracket for the TC, shortened rear drive shaft etc.. my questions are:

—Can i keep my original clutch master cylinder?

 

—Do ill have to change the pilot bearing? 


—If I'm running the 98 dana30 with the 98 front brake setup will ill have to change my brake MC? 


—If you get any tips/advice that i should know before starting the project its welcome!


The xj comes with a welded 8.25 so I'm not planning to swap rear axle as ill not take the manche offroading.

 

I also wondering wich part of the 98xj i should keep that can be a easy upgrade for the mj?

To answer your questions:

 

You could keep the original master cyl.  However, you will need to match the slave cyl for the bore.  It may be easier to purchase a pre-bled master/slave kit.

 

The input tip on that year's AX15 is larger than the tip of a BA10.  Yes, you will need to change the pilot bearing/bushing.  Search RockAuto for a PB for a 1973 CJ5 with a 304 cu. in.

 

I won't swear to the front axle.  I swapped a 93 D30 (non-CAD) and did not change the MC.  (I just recently swapped booster and MC to a 95/96 XJ.)

 

I did a BA10 to AX15 swap years ago.  I will have to think about the steps again.

Do you have an idea on wich master/slave kit ill need? Or wich year/jeep i can find something that will fit? A salvage yard where i am have a older model xj (96 and older but didnt chek what year exactly) manual with the 4.0

I believe the pre-97 hydraulic master/slave kits will work for your (our) era Jeep.  The 97+ have a different master cyl that may not fit.

 

You can get one from a JY.  But, RockAuto has one for $100 (plus tax and shipping). https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=7325656&cc=1180314&pt=10290&jsn=600.  Probably a lot less work.  Just my 2¢.
