motor Qs and cooling system Qs.

Recommended Posts

Alright I have the 2.5L TBI in my 88 MJ 2wd Auto. When ever I get off the high way and come to a complete stop that dang oil light will flicker and the rig starts to shake more and almost stall out. Any one have any ideas as to what that may be all about? Its bad enough that it runs rough when sitting still and I have to apply some gas to smooth it out.

Cooling system. I bought a radiator off a guy from here and its a closed system appearently. Now I forget who it was but i'm very thankful he was able to help. Question is, is that over flow tank under pressure at all? Right now its not hooked up. The new radiator is one out of a 4.0 so I just have connects for upper and lower hose, tranny oil cooler and what looks like where a sensor would go but its plugged up. My plan was to get a new over flow tank since I need a new one and put together some fittings that will screw into that port. My worry is that if I do that then the over flow tank will have pressure going to it and eventually blowing it up or the at least the top off. So thoughts comments? I really don't like running with no over flow tank not to mention its annoying to pop a hose off to add fluid and what not.

Also for the people who still have the base cluster with the lights. What is that light at the bottom left hand side? The one that is below the temp light.

As far as the idling/ oil pressure issue goes I would say your IAC is not working right. I have an 89 2.5 4 speed and just had the same problem but my injector was also stuck open. Replaced the idle air control and problem solved. No more near stalling and I have a cold high idle back.

Now for your cooling/ radiator a 4.0 radiator can be put in but is alot of work. Your shroud won't fit, fan will be to far from the radiator to even work. It sounds like you also have a radiatir out of a renix that doesnt have a cap on it. In the closed style system the bottle is under pressure. You will need tofigure out a way to get a cap in there. One option would be a durango upper hose filler.

Honestly the best bet would be to just to sell the 4.0 rad and go and go buy yourself a new 2.5 radiator and save the headaches before thay start. Just my .02

well i've been running that renix rad since the end of summer no problems what so ever. How would I go about adding in a way to dump fluid in? Also it was extreamly easy to take out the old rad and put in that new one. About the easiest thing i've done to the truck. Where on earth is that IAC and is it something that can be replaced in my drive way with very limited tools?

If your running the 4.0 rad now how did you get fluid in there? You will have to put a filler neck in the upper hose. These can be bought from summit racing or get an upper rad hose for a newer durango with a 4.7. The put a filler neck and rad cap in the upper hose.

IAC is a little black box looking thing that has a bolt sticking out and it pushes on the throttle linkage next to the throttle body. It takes about about 20 mins to install with no special tools required.

I think the IAC might be part of the problem and found a new one for 88 bucks and change with free shipping. All I did to add fluid was take the upper hose fill it until I couldn't put any more in, run the truck until it was warm/hot and added more in. Did that until I couldn't do it any more and no more over heating like I had with the old rad...aside from the old rad having a hole in it.

just go to summit and do a search for filler hose/ filler cap in regards to the newer (say 06 or 07) durango with the 4.7L? Also since you know what rad I have can I use the plugged port to hook up an over flow bottle with out the worry of it having to deal with too much pressure? Understand what i'm asking? If not, aside from trying to do what you've already told me what I should do I would also like to have a over flow tank hooked up as well if possible. Also thanks a lot for your help and speedy responses.

You should be able to find it on summit that way. Durango hoses started with the filler in hose around 02. May have to call the dealer on that not real sure. The filler should have a place for an overflow hose. If you use the port on the rad it will be under pressure so don't use it. It will not work.

could be a bad "filter" from the breather for oil and causing oil to go into the throttle body. try disconnecting the line from the intake and plugging the hol ein the intake. then go down the road and see if it still happens
