2.5L Aluminum valve cover swap

Recommended Posts

My original valve cover was warped and leaking. I ordered a new plastic valve cover but the holes were way off. So I found an aluminum valve cover locally to use. I already got the 98 dodge dakota blue felpro gasket and a new oil fill cap. What I can't find is the right part to go here. This grommet and elbow is what I found looking through several years of wranglers and cherokees so I thought I got the right configuration but it appears not. I know I can hog out that hole to accept the grommet I have but was wondering if anyone knew the correct part that goes there

That valve cover is an older version (91-93, maybe?) of the metal cover, probably part number 53008559.

The crankcase vent tube fitting you need goes in and secures with a 1/4 twist.  I sometimes have used ones, but not at the moment.

I have researched this before and found several part numbers- 53030591, 53009243, 53030497.

I haven't bought these, so can't promise they are right.

@schardeinThank you! I didnt realize they were available in 91-93. I was looking from 94-2000. The NAPA by me has one in stock so Ill swing by after work and grab it

I forgot to mention that the breather should have an opening like the one in the picture in my first post.

These engines don't use a Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve in the traditional sense.  They use a "metered orifice" to control the flow of vacuum that vents the crankcase.  In the 4.0, that metered orifice was in the rear fitting.  That rear fitting looks just like the rear one in the 2.5, except for the smaller hole (first pic in this post).

The 2.5 uses a small brass fitting on the side of the valve cover that is the metered orifice.

Two things, 1. make sure the breather elbow fitting you buy does not have the small hole, and 2. make sure your brass metered orifice is clear.  Every one I have ever pulled is clogged with gunk/carbon.

Thanks again! I'm familiar with the setup on the plastic valve cover that has a traditional PCV valve as its the same as my 89 YJ but these aluminum ones are a bit different. I may end up swapping the one on my YJ too, someday. I already pulled the baffles out from inside the valve cover as well as the brass fitting and let them soak in a bucket of purple power overnight. They were pretty gunked up but came out good as new. Going to cut the baffles down like shown in cruisers tip #25 before reinstalling them
