bad steering stabilizer?

Recommended Posts

I have been having just a little problem with the comanche for a while now, and its getting to the point that I just want to get rid of it for good. When I am turning just slightly to the right, and this ONLY happens to the right, my front wheels will start to wobble, sometimes badly. This happens usually at medium speeds, meaning it won't do it going slowly or above about 50. It only does it when the steering wheel is turned probably about 15*-30* to the right of center, so its easy enough to stop it when it happens. It doesnt do it ALL the time, but if I wanted it to do it it would be pretty easy to get it to. This happened when my dad had the truck a while back, and he took it to a local tire shop and they said it was a bad steering stabilizer. They replaced it and the problem went away for quite a while, but now its back. With my 31" tires what I have read makes me think that it is the steering stabilizer and that I need to replace it with a stronger one, but I just wanted to make sure that this is the most likely cause before I spend much money on one.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Steering stabilizers will not cause these problems. you have something else causing the problem. Replacing the stabilizer may again cause you not to experience the wobbles, BUT IT IS ONLY MASKING THE PROBLEM.

Have the front end checked out and be sure you.they look closely. Everyone imeadiately jumps to the track bar as the end all answer to Death Wobbles. I will admit it is a large contributor to the problem but there are many other parts that can cause it.

Do a search on ANY Jeep board for Death Wobble and you will be reading for a month of Sundays!!! There is SO much info out its not funny.

Good luck,

CW

If it was me, i would reconsider not selling your MJ, after all they are quite unique and rare. We'll try to help ya with the SS thing. Oh and BTW, be careful when using such words as cause. It was on this forum or maybe one of the other boards that the rocket scientists get riled for not stating the obvious  lol.

I'm dealing with a wobble right now... its not something to sell a jeep over... they are relativly simple to fix once you pinpoint it and have some time to devote to it... both of which I'm still waiting to do.

I have actually been leaning more on the tire blance/SS than any of my front suspention components... I guess cheapest things first

(1) Have the front tires rebalanced.

(2) Check the condition of the front hub/bearing units. I suspect one may be worn.

(3) Check the torque on your lug nuts!

I had the same exact problem on the '88 MJ when I swappped on a pair of almost new 235/75 Pirellis on factory alloys. Right turns at 50 or 55 MPH would set off massive death wobble.

I took off those tires and wheels, put on a pair of 215/75 BFGs I had on steel rims, and the problem is gone.

I need to look more carefully at those rims. They were take-offs from a wreck and appeared good, but I suspect either balance, or physical damage to the rims.

Just because no one's mentiong how to check the front end.

Jack it up and put it on stands so the front end is unloaded, then push pull and prod everything under there, tighten everything that's loose, and replace everything that wiggles.
