Anthi4078
Hey everyone, I purchased my MJ back in January and I’ve been wanting to convert it to 4WD since. I think I’m finally ready but I had some questions as to what parts I’m gonna need to collect to make the switch. I’ve seen a bunch of other threads on doing this conversion but none were exactly my truck so I just wanna be sure. Ok so my truck is a 1987 2WD 4.0 with the Ba-10 transmission and a Dana 44 rear axle. I would like to keep it manual but can’t find any manual Cherokees being junked around me, so what I’m wondering is if I could take the front axle, driveshaft, and linkages and what not out of a old automatic Cherokee, and then try and get a AX-15 paired with a NP-231 or 242 out of a old YJ or TJ. Any information would be of help, thanks
KBRAY88MJ
I would say keep looking and wait until you find the ax15 you want. Deals can be found if your patient. I was in the same boat your in and one day in marketplace on bookface came across a deal for 300 complete trans/transfer case, front driveshaft and crossmember out of a 97 Cherokee. Maybe put out a wanted ad in this forum and also and bookface groups. What is your location?
KBRAY88MJ
Also, yes you can get everything else from an auto Cherokee. Depending on what your gears are currently might be a good time to upgrade to 3.55 or 4.10 from a stock Cherokee.

Anthi4078
Ok so I actually ended up finding a junkyard like 10 minutes from my house that had a manual Cherokee. I took the trans, transfer case, front driveshaft and front axle. The Cherokee was a 1987 Cherokee Chief two door with the 4.0 and a ba-10. I’m wondering since my truck has the same transmission and there the same year if I could just take the tail shaft off my transmission and bolt the transfer case to it. Any insight would be helpful, thanks.
