Waldec
Hi All! I'm new to the Comanche forum and I now have 2 Comanches. The first is an 89-2WD-4.0L with the 4 speed automatic on the colum shift. The second is an 86-4WD-2.5L 3 speed automatic on the floor and has bad body rot, I mean real bad. I just picked the 4wd up as a parts truck, the only thing is I assumed it was a 4.0L. My question is does anyone know if the 4wd stuff including the trany from the 86-4wd will bolt up to the 89 4.0L? I haven't looked too hard at it yet and would like to keep the 4.0. I know it's easier to sell the 2wd and get a 4wd etc etc. Fact is the 2wd is in pretty good condition and I've had it for 5 or 6 years now so it doesn't really stand me anything and the 86-4wd was bought for cheep and it is rotten. Worst case senario is I put the 2.5 and 4wd gear in the 89. Anyone know how the 2.5 is for power, I'm sure it isn't the same as the 4.0 by any streach of the imagination. Thanks for any help or direction.
87manche
nope, you'll need to get a 4x4 AW4 transmission and t-case. Shouldn't be too hard to salvage from a rolled or wrecked cherokee. If I recall there was an electronics change when they wen't OBD-II, so you're going to probably want a trans out of something 91-95. The reason I say that is because that's when the AW4 went to 23 Spline output. I would suggest that route over movng the 2.5 over. Do that and you'll also have an electronic nightmare. Since your truck is an auto anyway it would be as simple as plugging a 4WD Aw4 in. You'll likely have to get your 2WD Driveshaft cut down to the right size. I would use the axles out of the 2.5, they'll be geared lower, that is unless you've got a d44 in the rear of the 2WD, in that case get it regeared to match the 2.5L front axle. Waldec
Thanks for the reply, I'll start looking for the AW4, I'm new to the termenology so I got to ask is AW4 and OBD-II short for anything?
bhawkin2
The AW4 is just the name or type of Automatic trans in your truck. An OBD II is the type of Diagnostic
