5 spd swap help

Recommended Posts

so my buddy is putting a 4 bager and AX5 into his 86 comanche that has the auto trans.

aside from the actual install of the tranny and engine, what else will be different? will the trans cross member work? drive shaft? pedal assy (can I use to pedals from a yj?) resevoir?

od should I just keep the auto trans and worry aboutthe swap when the 4bt and NV4500 go in?

the swap entails a tranny swap, you'll need the clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, throwout plate, slave (get an external), master, shift linkage, and an ax5 tranny mount.

you'll need a pedal assembly from a comanche or cherokee, a yj one won't work. I have an assembly for you $15 plus shipping, minus a m/c but that's no biggy.

the crossmembers are the same, just may be in a different location. (holes are there). other than that it should be fairly bolt-in, and I would do it sooner rather than later, as you'll improve the gas mileage and help save $$$ for the 4bt swap.

crossmember will work but you'll need the manual tranny mount. I helped a buddy do the same swap on his YJ, and the pedal assembly is a complete unit that bolts into the lower dash....I don't think it would work on an MJ. Not sure about the driveshafts, either. My 87 is the same setup but it's a shortbed, and the stock driveshaft (rear) is 47" center to center of the JU caps.

i am hoping to just unbolt the engine and tranny from the MJ in one nit, pull it out, then slide the new driveline from the YJ in, as one unit.

The tranny mount my local JY will have, as well as pedal assy's and master cylinder. So hopefullyit will only be a weekend or two worth of work.

also, just remembered, if his 86 has a neutral safety switch, you'll have to bypass it. On my buddy's YJ, all we had to do was ground the center wire (3 wire connector).

You may not have the same backup light switch wiring either. You'll have to get creative with that to make them work. The b/u switch on the AX5 is on the passenger side below the shift tower. It's a 2 wire switch if I remember.

Have fun!
