87' MJ I4 to I6 swap and brake conversion questions.

Recommended Posts

I have an 87' MJ that I am restoring as a project and had a couple of questions. The jeep is currently an I4, 5 speed manual, 4x4 with what i think is the DANA 33. It is in rough condition and needs a new engine.

My first question is, if i purchase an I6 long block, will it bolt up to the stock tranny and if it does can it handle the upgrade?

2.) Does the I6 have the same motor mounts as the I4 or will I need to change them to fit?

3.) If the tranny does not fix / cannot handle the upgrade, what tranny will accept the I6.

my next question is about the popular rear brake conversion from drums to discs. My drum brakes need to be complete replaced. I would rather not rebuild the drums and instead install discs. I have heard that it can be done with minimal moding done to the brake system, just taking the disc brake system and dust cover from a late 80's - early 90's cherokee/Grand cherokee brakes and installing it on the existing rear axles.

1.) Which year of jeep would be the best to fit my jeep, if any?

2.) Would it be easier/cheaper to purchase new parts vs taking chances with a pick n pull?

These are the questions if have for now, I know I will have more. The following link is to an album of pictures for the jeep i have taken so far.

The short answer to your question is, no.

No parts for the swap interchange, rad, rad support, mounts, fuel delivery, ignition, harness, trans, DSs.......etc.........

Your best bet is to find a XJ as a complete donor.

That said, your TB and intake and flywheel....2.5 related parts are getting impossible to find. Use them, sell them, give them away.....but please, don't scrap them.
