buckwheat
I want to swap out my original steering box with a quick steer out of a WJ. I have read that normally you need to remove the pitman arm and use your existing one. At the same time I would like to upgrade the tie rod ends with the bigger ones from a V8 WJ. So my 1st question: Can I keep the WJ pitman arm on the steering box and transfer over all the front end pieces onto my axle? A full swap if you will. 2nd question: What power steering pump should I get to run the new steering box? I know that hornbrod used an 04 wrangler pump, but that requires changing the intake and pump mounting I believe. I am looking for something that is a direct replacement. Finally: Anything I should be aware of before starting this swap? Things that are likely to break or go wrong? Thanks for the help.
HOrnbrod
It's a 93-98 ZJ steering gear box, not WJ. The WJ box is a different animal. The ZJ Pitman has a 1" drop as compared to the MJ/XJ box, so unless you have higher than a 3" lift, you need to retain your original Pitman arm to maintain the track bar / drag link parallel geometry. All the ZJ steering parts from a V8 ZJ (track bar, drag link, tie rod) are direct bolt-in swaps and considered upgrades because they are beefier. Your existing power steering pump will work fine with the ZJ steering gear - been done many times. Even on a Renix.
Crash
If you are buying NEW parts, an aftermarket tie rod and ends won't cost much more than the V8 ZJ setup. If you are sourcing the tie rod from your local JY and replacing the ends, then that will most likely be less expensive.
buckwheat
Thanks for the correction on the letters. Stupid typo on my part. And I do plan on going to the JY. Hoping to get lucky and find all the parts in one place.
