Steve Gregory
I just swapped my MJ to 4wd and I have a shift pattern to the NP231 but I have the 242 in my Jeep. Would it be alright if I left it like that? Or would I need to get the 242 pattern? I can shift it through all the gears still.

Steve Gregory
Then I'll let it go as is. Like I said, I have no issues shifting through any gears.....You're only in Sterling Heights, that's only about an hour from Monroe county. Want to swap parts? Blue XJ
I would, but mine is from a 97+ XJ. If that's the same style that you have I'll swap ya.
mvusse
Because of the different shift pattern (and extra position), the shifter gate is different, and the tab that bolts to the transfer case that the linkage pops into is (going from memory) 3.5" on a 231, 3" on a 242. Using the tab of a 231 on a 242 causes you to hit the end of the shift gate before you are fully engaged in 4-low. As a good friend of mine always says: "Ask me how I know..."
