Hello All!

I recently purchased a beautiful '88 Pioneer Comanche. The A/C does not work. Heat works, fan works, but no cold air.

The seller said that he re-charged the a/c but to no avail. I plan on re-charging myself, just to make sure.

After that, I have heard I could replace the pressure switches (hi/lo pressure switches?), and maybe "one other switch"??

If those are not the problem, I need a new Compressor, which I know would be expensive. I'm obviously no mechanic, but I'm persistent and resourceful.

1) Does anyone have an additional thought?

2) Does anyone have simple step-by-step instructions to purchasing and changing those switches?

3) Also, I have heard of installing an electrical fan; cools engine and acts as a/c while the engine is powered/revved? (probably beyond my capabilities, fortunately I have savvy friends)

Look fwd to reading replies! thanks!

I wouldn't go throwing parts at it just yet. You should get a manifold and vacuum pump and pull it down as low as it will go and see how long it will hold. To convert to r134a refrigerant with stop leak you need to replace all the orings with newer type and drain old oil as it is not compatible. Probably the evaporator as that is one of the most fun jobs you will ever do on a jeep.

:yeah that:Odds are the PO did recharge it but it didn't hold.  Yours, like mine, probably has a leak.  Mine was at a hose crimp fitting.  Determine why it didn't hold a charge and go from there.

Save your $ for awhile - - Fast & dirty check to start - When you turn on the AC does the compressor turn/run? - - If it runs that's a pretty good indication that the system is charged & just low on freon - - If it doesn't turn, then jump the low pressure switch  - If it now turns then the system is empty/too low to cool - If does not run then other probs; clutch, compressor, electrical & on n on - - - AC gets tons of what's wrong alla time, esp spring/summer - - Fortunately, tons of help here on CC - - - Come back with a little more info & use search to mine gobs of info:  questions/solutions/help/how to , , ,

Google search is great - - site:comancheclub.com keyword/keywords - - - examples - site:comancheclub.com ac not working - - ac problems - -

Cool, good starting place. Oldseddie I live in Asheville, pretty cool. And what exactly do you mean by get a manifold and vacuum? And where do I pull it down as low as possible and see if what holds?

Yeah, dainternetguy, I figured the guy was full of it, but it gave me an angle to talk him down $900 from his asking price.. which may be what I spend to get it fixed. oh well

Since your in Asheville you can bring it by my brothers dive shop Bermuda Triangle and I can check it for you. You need to get a low pressure side adapter as it is not a standard fitting. I would recommend getting a couple of r134a adaptors at Napa and green orings as the r12 best low pressure adapter is hard to find. I have to borrow one from a friend in Black Mtn. Pm me and we can discuss plans for checking it out.
