Broken Odometer...anyone Know How To Fix?

Recommended Posts

I've got a '92 MJ. Recently the odometer starting working intermittently...know it only will roll over if I hold down the reset button...

The trip has stopped working altogether.....grrr...

Anybody know a remedy to this? . :MJ 1: .

Thanks!

The quick and easy fix would be to just grab one (a cluster) out of an HO(91-96) Cherokee and swap it in. They are plentiful and with no speedo cable in the HO gauge cluster they are simple to swap. Though someone may be able to chime in with a more technical answer; to me any fix is going to require removal of the thing and if you already gotta remove it you may as well throw a replacement in and skip all the hassle of messing with it and hoping that it ends up working.

Starting in 91, the odo/trip meter assembly was enclosed in a "tamper proof" housing. I have tried to tamper when I was calibrating cluster gauges; it's a no go except if you want to destroy it. It's not like the Renix assembly that was easy to swap. Your options are a new HO cluster close to your actual mileage, or a speedo swap from a 91-96 cluster. Either way you have to pull the cluster.
