Rokhound
Well as you some of you guys no that I was laid of a while back and both of my MJ went up 4 sale and I thought I was going to have to sell them. Well good new from the peanut gallery they called me to day and asked if I would come back to work on Monday so I am in a great mood. And I am keeping both trucks now the only thing that sucks is I have to go back to work and not a lot of time to work on the truck but that is ok. :headpop: I will just have to make time for the MJ. If I can get my self up and going on the bills side of thing I just might have enough time/money to get my truck done my Memorial Day run at MIOBI. Rokhound
Told ya' not to rush and sell them!! Glad to hear it man!! I no man but you no how when your setting here a home and no money bills start adding up and stuff just goes racing thru or head like what if this or that or god forbid that happen and then the next thing you no your toys are 4 sale and you like damn I could of rode this out and every thing would of been ok. Well that is what happen to me. I almost sold my claws last night I mean I was so close to it and then I back out. Thank god I did I would of been kicking my a$$ today that is for sure. But on more positive not since I have had no money to work on the truck (but I still have do something to the truck) I have been researching the ideal of the a 3 link/ 4 link ideal and I have learned a lot and is one of the thing I am going to try to do in about a year or so an less something happens like I win the lottery or something. I have been following and poking my head around on the Toyota forum and see what they have been doing. I thought that I would be closer than an XJ. Well we will see where this goes I am leaning toward a 3 link with track bar and coils. More on this once I make the plunge if I ever do that is. pingpong
I have been following your post on PBB, and it sis really an expensive route to go, especially if you build it to take abuse. The triangulated 4 ling is far supperior to the 3 link, and is also easier to set up if you ask me. My advice is don't skimp on the quality of the joints. You can save some cash by making your own brackets if you have lots of free time ( I don't so I buy my brackets) Loosing the fuel tank and going with a fuel cell is expensive, but won't compromise the design for cost
87manche
I too am planning on linking the rear of the MJ. but, in wanting to keep my bed space and stock tank, I am willing to make the comprimise and go with a 3 link+panhard. I realize that a 4 link is better, but I also think that a 3 link properly setup will still be better than leafs. I had planned on using airbags rather than coils, so I could adjust the ride height based on weight in the bed. I'm like pete, and wheel with 600 pounds of stuff back there. I've not done anything but the preliminary measurements, I think I can make it all fit, but I've not done the math on anti squat and such. it's a far off project. Rokhound
Yeah I know that the price is going to be up there and that is why I am just gathering ideas right now. I will buy the good joints. I am leaning toward the 4 link and running coils but I have not seen this done is there a reason for that. I have a couple of friends that run race cars/demo cars so I might be able to get my hand on a good used one. That or my other thought is to take the stock fuel tank and but it in the bed and build something around it to protect it. I still think that I can build the rear link for around 600 to 800. Am I right on that thought I mean I was willing to pay that for a long arm kit for the front so why not put that in the rear as will. And thanks for your input over on Pirate as well. I am learning and when/if I ever start these I will have more educated questions. So please bear with me while I am learning the language.
pingpong
Depending on the joints you use, and wether or not you use bushings at one end, you are looking at anywhere from 150 to 400 for joints depending on what you use. Then you would still need brackets, and if you made them your self a half a sheet of 1/4 plate. Lets not forget about link material. For the 1.25 size joints you need huge 1.5 ID tubing. I am looking at having to use 2.25 by .375 wall stuff, and That is going to cost me a pretty penny. I figure just in link tube is going to be 3-400 depending on what I order at the same time Most ppl who do the captured coils eventually end up doing coilovers or airshocks :brows: The cost savings is only minimal, by the time you figure in fab time and figuring out the right spring rate. Lots of ppl doing it though. To me it would just be as easy to do coilovers, easier mounts to fab. Also the captured coil rigs have more hieght for the most part
87manche
I had planned on about $1k to three link the rear. I'd likely go with superflex joints since they're easily rebuildable. all of this stuff is real expensive though.
