Hey All! Newbie here. I just picked up my first MJ.

I've had a couple Cherokees (XJs?) in the past and loved them.

My new toy is an '89 long bed 4X4 with the 4.0 and auto trans.

It's got a few issues, but I'm looking forward to digging into it. I have way too many Mopar projects to take on another full fledged project, so I will try very hard NOT to get too involved with this one. Just fix a few small things... (So the story goes... :-)

It's got the larger 23.5 gallon tank... I know this because I filled it up and promptly had to syphon over half of it back out due to a nice leak along the pinch weld... :-) Thanks to a search here I found the link to new tanks on Ebay.

I'm sure the floor boards are rusted half to death... I'll work up the courage to pull up the carpet soon.

The flashers don't work and the left blinker is very slow. I'll check the bulbs and both flashers under the dash.

The windshield is cracked pretty good. I'll hit the local Pull-A-Part and see if I can get a Cherokee windshield without too much drama. The rear sliding glass window leaks too.

The tranny seems to work itself too hard by up and down shifting ALL the time. I'll do some searching to see if this is common or been addressed before.

It just started idling very high when first started. Another search project.

It takes a few seconds of cranking to start every time. Looks like several potential causes I need to investigate.

See pics above.

NOT a Project!! Really.... :-)

From paperwork left in the glove box it was purchased new in Florida and spent some time in New Mexico before moving up to Ohio and then going through several owners when it landed here in Kentucky.

The original window sticker, Owner's Manual and Warranty Information book were still in the glovebox as well!

I stopped by the shop where I got the truck this morning (I traded a Ford F250 Farm Truck for it).

I got the permanent plate and worked a deal for the gas tank. We'll go half & half on the tank and they'll install it. Fair enough for me. I've had to pull gas tanks before (usually right after I fill up! :-), so having them replace it on their lift is a lot easier.

The new gas tank arrived and should be installed Thursday.

Power Steering pump is whinning now...

Gotta find some time to do a little work on this NON project! :-)

Some quick calculations (only putting a couple gallons in at a time) show that it's getting well over 20 MPG!

I'll get more specific mileage once the new tank is in.

It does tow fairly well:

Is this wiring bracket under the rear bumper something that came stock with the towing package, or is it something a PO would have installed?

Either way, it's pretty cool. The crimp connectors were dry rotted and I had to replace them, but so far so good.

Has anyone successfully towed a car trailer with a full size car on it with their Comanche? I'm a little worried about the "Tail Wagging the Dog" scenario trying to tow my Duster drag car to the track...

The new gas tank is installed and not leaking.

Next priority is replacing the noisy power steering pump.

The level is not low, but the fluid looks like coffe with lots of creamer... I wonder if I replaced the fluid if it would quiet up...?

Mine had the same issue with leaky gas tank. I realized it right after filling up the tank. The seller is going to pay to install a used one. Also if you use the transmission switch on the dash it might help with the shifting. I think comfort mode makes it not shift so sparatically.

Thanks for the reply. The seller replaced my gas tank with a new one and we split the cost of the tank. It cost $114, so I paid $57.

The switch on the dash is set on comfort mode. I've read some posts about certain grounds that could effect several things like the transmission shifting, etc.

I just need to find the time to dig into it a little more.
