Reverse Cut Or Normal Rotation Gears?

Recommended Posts

On a high pinion front axle, should the gears be reverse or normal rotation?

If it were low pinion, would it be the same? Trying to wrap my head around this, and am confused between high and low pinions...

High pinions are reverse cut.  Calling it reverse rotation doesn't make any sense, everything still spins the same way.

If you tried to put HP gear in an LP, the teeth wouldn't mesh unless the pinion shaft was pointing at the ground.  I can whip up some comparative diagrams when I get home if you're still confused.

I realize the gears are only reverse cut, not reverse rotation, but I threw that in because that is the terminology most people use, so if someone is doing a search in the future, it would possibly come up. The confusion comes from me not remembering which pinion uses the reverse cut. High or low.
Thanks for the clarification.
