sunroof gasket repair

Recommended Posts

So, anybody ever find a replacement gasket for a factory sunroof? I've looked around, even called the local glass repair place. I RTV'd it tonight, just because I was getting tired of being dripped on, or having a wet seat. Of course that's not the proper permanent fix, so caugh up your parts suppliers.

Places I've checked already:

Autozone

Advance

Napa

Local glass place

Body shop run by a customer of mine.

They mostly look at me like 'm crazy when I ask for the sunroof gasket for an 87 MJ.

oh, I've googled the hell out of it.

I was trying to avoid the dealership route. Dealer can get one for an XJ, which I imagine is the same gasket, but they want like $180, and I can't give it back to them if they special order it and it doesn't fit.

You wouldn't happen to have a pic of your sunroof would you? I've got one in mine but I don't know if it's OEM or aftermarket, and I've never seen another MJ with one to compare. I'm guessing it's aftermarket 'cuz the rest of the truck is all base model (rubber mat, AM radio, no power nothing) but I can't find any manufacturer markings on it anywhere. I need to get some replacement parts for the latching mechanism...it's sealed but it won't stay up because of the broken parts.

BTW, spray silicone works great on that gasket just like the door gaskets. I hit mine about 3X a year, open the door (or sunroof) and spray on the silcone, let it soak in for a few minutes and "swell" the gasket, then shut it up.

Yeah, unfortunately it's not the part of the gasket that seals against the glass. My leak is from the gasket shrinking and pulling from the roof. When the truck was repainted they didn't pull the sunroof out, I'm sure that wasn't good for the gasket. I can see the cracks in the paint where the gasket has shrunk.

My sunroof has chrysler markings on it. I suppose it's possible that it came from an xj and someon cut the roof and put it in. I haven't investigated that. I need to email DC and get the build sheet.

Mine is technically a Pioneer, but it's had a full console and buckets swapped in. All of this was done previous, so I don't know the whole story, which makes things more difficult.

I'll take some pictures of it, and get the part number off the glass for you.

I've got wedding counseling tonight, so probably won't be until tomorrow.

That sucks. Mine has a 1" aluminum trim piece around the outside, and the gasket is buried under that. Maybe you could try gooping in some clear sealant to seal it (?)

On a side note, I almost wish I didn't have mine, down here in VA. No A/C plus a black vinyl interior, and in the summer the sun just beats down on you from the roof. It's like a little EZ bake oven :D I don't have an inside covering for it, so I just jam some cardboard sheeting up and wedge it in above the visors.....I've even toyed with the idea of spraying the inside of the glass flat black (ghettofab at it's bestest).

Yeah, Mine doesn't have that trim piece. It's just a big rubber gasket. like what you see around newer windshields.

Who knows, maybe it's supposed to.

I planned on making the future wife sewing me a cover to put the glass in, and I was going to make brackets on the rear of thte cab to pop it out.

I have owned 2 xj's with sun roofs, and had no problems with leakge out of them. One was a 87 limited with a d44 :D the other was a 90 limited. Where I live I come across them frequently. I hate to tell you the stealership might be the only way to go. The best bet is to have a shop that your are friends with get it, cause most dealerships mark their price up about 30 - 50%. They don't mark it up that hi for a shop.

Jeff It sounds like yours is aftermarket, I would just Find another one and swap it in if it leaks. Also with your pending marriage keep me in mind when your wife makes you sell your jeep for a minivan

and for the record, me and Missi (my wife) are coming up on our 14th anniversary this year. She's hated my MJ from the day I got it, but she tolerates it 'cause it gets her azz around when the weather gets not so nice.

I plan on being buried inside of it when I die, so it ain't going anywhere anytime soon

yep, that's just what mine looks like. That small piece of trim goes around the glass on top. Then there's a bbig rubber gasket that surrounds the whole thing and is pinched from underneath with a whole bunch of 1/4" reverse torx screws.
