MJRemi
My son just transferred to Scott AFB and we have transferred title of our 09 Hyundai Elantra to him. He now has the car from CA with him. The registration fees are about $180 if he keeps CA plates but I was wondering if he would be better off registering in IL . I'm not sure if he will be exempt from CA emissions but I would think he is. Any insight to vehicle registration costs in IL would be helpful. Automan2164
Bend over... http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/vehicles/basicfees.html Title Transfer $95 Passenger plate registration $101 +Taxes/fees... IIRC. (I've only experienced bought vehicle registration, not transfer.) He would then adhere to IL emissions though, which is just a plug into the OBD II port to make sure everything is working correctly. Which also depends on City/County testing... In my town, they do not require an emissions test. Rob
MJRemi
Thanks Rob, CA is about $170 ( for the Hyundai ) to renew registration but it gets reduced a little each year. My MJ is $67 but needs emissions every 2 years, which is a roll of the dice to pass or not. Since my son is military I think he might be eligible for a waiver from smog if he lives out of state, but I'm not sure. He's only stationed at Scott for 2 years so he'll have to decide which way to go on registration.
