New Guy Needs Help. Xj Rear In Mj

Recommended Posts

hello I'm pretty new here. i just bought my first mj in august. i have had a couple zjs and a yj. i bought a 86 4x2 5 speed mj. its got the 2.5. it is my daily driver because my lifted zj is horrible on gas. i was told my mj has a.10 rear in it. i was wondering if i took a cherokee rear with.55 would i be able to just swap them out? and if so what do i have to do to make the speedo right? I'm not looking to off road this at all i just use it to drive back and forth to work and pick up parts for the other jeeps I'm working on.

By a.10 do you mean 4.10?

If so, yes, it should have a factory 4.10 geared rear axle. You're better off with it. If you swap it over to 3.55, 5th gear will become all but useless to you.

To make the axle work, you'd need to cut off the XJ perches and shock mounts, and weld perches on in the MJ locations. For the speedo, you'd simply need to swap in the correct gear in the transmission.

or keep the perches on top of the axles (like the XJ) but move them over to the slightly wider springs of the mj. Plus It will give it a cool rake to clear the tires with all those cool parts in the back. Some black paint and some skinny jeans and walla! Sorry couldn't resist tossing a joke in there. 1988-jeep-comanche-black-on-black-thats-how-i-roll.jpg
