Motor Swap

Recommended Posts

Ok if you have been a member for awhile you know when i get back home i am doing a motor swap from a 91 YJ 2.5(MPI) into my 87 MJ 2.5(TBI) and I don't need to hear i should go 4.0 cause do to the deal I'm getting and the Fact my crazy brain  really likes the 2.5 :chillin: i am not going with a 4.0. I already know that my ECU and harness have to be swapped for the MPI one but can anyone give me pointers or straight out tell me how hard the harness and Comp swap will be. I have done alot of work to my truck and other vehicles but never have i swapped a harness/ecu from one to another. I am thinking leave the harness connected to the motor side (well as much as possible and disco it form the ECU but can anyone see a prob or better way than that. What issues could i run into. I kinda ask this before but now its getting closer and we have alot new members so I thought i would gather as much intel as i could befoer i go threw with it. Thanks

your way is right...leave as much connected as possible. the only problem i see with the project is that, as it is coming out of a wrangler and not a cherokee or comanche, the harness wires will not be the same lengths as the comanche ones. you're gonna have a chore to make everything work...

Yeah I got shrink tube and a solder gun and such I used to wire car stereos up before The military so the wiring shouldnt be an issue. Also I have may nieghbor go look at the truck and compare wire possitions and such so I should hear back from him so that I know the areas of concern. Also Could I find a 91-92 MJ with a 2.5 and it be the MPI i think it should but couldnt i take that harness and ecu and it work right in mine???? Just a thought I may try that if it will work Cause then i know it will fit correctly.

yea but with the xj one you will have to redo some of the interior harness (if you swap that) to work your b pillar lights, and your taillights. if you can find an mj, that's the way to go. if you find an xj, it's still a pretty good alternative

What do you mean the interior harness. I was under the impression that the only wires and such i have to touch is the engine harness and the ECU itself. I thought the other stuff could remain stock MJ and it would work. So am I wrong???

I'd presume they're the same, but if not then you'll have to worry. see, different years of different vehicles could have a different firewall connector on the harness (by firewall connector I mean the wiring connector that connects the engine harness to the interior harness).

I just wanted to heads up you so if they are different you know what's coming. I doubt if they would be between the cherokee and comanche, but i can basically guarantee they would be between the wrangler and the mj. the colors would probably be the same intra wrangler-comanche, but the connector end would most likely be different.

your motor swap IS a great idea, so don't doubt that. but for a engine harness, get one from a cherokee. only way to do it with minimal issues.
