Kona
Anyone had this before? I never had, I have this ticking noise coming from the valve cover after the engine is off, like heat noise but it happens even after start and shut off , almost like a valve trying to move or a rod trying to move, any ideas ? 05mxdiesel
Its probably your exhaust cooling and contracting.
Dookie
I know what you are talking about. It's not exhaust noise either. My 87 used to do it often. Have no idea what it is though lol.
Kona
Yeah, no exhaust, sound like it, but comes from inside valve cover, have rebuilt many 4.0's and never had this, it's like she is talking to Me!!! Lol!

Blue XJ
I took my valve cover off and looked at everything. I had a few pushrods that were barely spinning some going really fast. I took the rocker arms off and there was no abnormal wear on them. When I was tightening them back down I was able to recreate the noise. I guess it mjust be valve springs sticking or something. I guess I'll remove them and reseat them. If you listen closely you can hear them ticking as I begin to torque the bolt and compress the valve spring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVWPU-VvUwA&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Blue XJ
Here's one reply I got on another forum. It makes sense to me and I was thinking the same thing actually. The rattle at idle is lifters and sounds to be piston rattle too... Which is normal on a 4.0... The ticking after it shuts off is the lifters bleeding down because of spring pressure and worn parts... Also somewhat normal unless its missing then it has a bad valve or bad lifter or broken piston which explains the excessive rattle... If that helps.. Kona
Interesting, I'll recheck I guess, but I know I put them in at factory specs and torque, not my first rodeo but sure is my first ticking bull! Lol! Thanks for the tip, I'll do it this weekend and see. Know I just need a xj cluster!
