Np207 To Np231

Recommended Posts

This evening I found a crack in the case of the NP207 in my '86 (2.5/AX5). Instead of replacing it with another noisy 207, I'd like to replace it with a 231.

Do all AX5's have the same output shaft? Do all NP231's behind AX5's interchange?

I have 2, 91+ NP231s that were behind AW4s and a 91+ NP231 that was behind an AX5. Will any of these work in my 86? Will the speedometer cable from the 207 replace the electronic sender on a 91+ 231?

Thanks for any help.

All of the AX5 231's were 21 spline as well as the BA10/5 ones. the 91+ AW4's were 23 spline while the 90- AW4's were 21 spline. The shifter should swap over without an issue, I'm not sure on the sender that goes into the transfer case though. I believe it was '88 that they changed the end that plugs into the speedometer so you will need to use your '86 speedometer cable but that will screw into any 231's sender as long as it's the cable driven one.

The BA 10/5 and early AW-4s were 21 spline, however the AX-5's 231 had a longer input shaft.

Also, the early 231s with the electric sender used the same holder for the gear, and just had an electric sender that screwed on to where the cable went. I don't think it went to the one piece until 93 or 94.
