Long to short visors

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gone from the old, 88 or 89- to the new 90+ sun visors? I'm pretty sure I know the jest of converting I just wondered if anyone had done it before me. I think the 3 holes that support the visors to the outside are the same on all of them it's just the ones towards the inside that are further out on older ones. My 88 MJ has the long goofy ones with no mirrors, and they're nasty. Plus I figure I can easily get my hands on a set from a 1997+ that have adjustable lighted mirrors. I also want to put an OHC in this unit and that would be next to impossible with these long ones. I would typically just tear into this if it was an XJ that I was familiar with, but MJs have that thicker layer of metal where they mount so I'm not too sure on them. If anyone has done this please let me know.

Thanks,

Collin

yes, i've done it with my brother's MJ when we built the OHC into it and mounted the CB and Radar up there.

you'll need the shorter visors and their clips and screws to do it. the 3 outer bolts line up no problem, bolt them in and line them up so that the ends are located in a straight line with the old mj visor clips, hook the shorty clips up to the new visors, and trace where you want it with a black marker (headliner should probably be out just cause you need to drill).

then get a bit that's the next size or a couple sizes smaller than the screw you're using on the new clips, mark the center of the hole with a black marker and then a punch. drill out the hole but be mindful of where the bit is...you do NOT want it to get to the end and just jump through, you'll dent out your roof and crack the paint there.

then mount it all up with the screws and there ya go. pretty easy. an added benefit as well is that you now have the old visor clip location to use as a mounting point for your OHC.
