sloride
Is there a way to bench test 231 transfer case, shift it in and out 4wd?
Naterenfo1
Yep, take out the transfer case, use the shifter connection and shift it from 2wd, to 4wd, and spin the front output shaft. If the rear output shaft moves when the front one moves 4wd works. you could even get crazy and check 4wd low by shifting it all the way forward. anyone else can chime in, but thats how I would check it. It has to be a 231J if you want any chance of it fitting in your jeep. Don't waste your time with a 231C.
sloride
The transfer case is on a bench separate from tranny. I tried moving the transfer case shift lever but it won't budge. I was wondering if there was something I was missing.
sloride
I was able to shift the lever. It's a 231J with lever down the input spins but nothing else. Lever up input and output spin but 4wd shaft does nothing.
Stacks
I would venture to guess you have found two of the four positions for the shift lever. The down position as you call it would appear to be neutral, the up position would appear to be 2HI. There should be a position between what you are calling up and down that should give you 4HI. Rock/rotate the input shaft back and forth as you move from the up position toward the down position and you should feel it engage 4HI. Same thing in the down position, rock/rotate the input shaft back and forth and move the shift lever further down. That would be the 4LO position. Hope that makes sense and helps.
