AX-15 midplate gasket

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on making a trip up to WI at the beginning of June, and I would like to replace the transmission in my brother's 98 XJ. He's somehow toasted 1st gear when the motor seized a few years ago, and 1st is now completely gone.

I already have a replacement AX-15 up there from a YJ. I've opened it up, and everything looks good, but I'm unsure how to reseal it properly before putting it back in. Right now it's just bolted back together with the original gaskets, doused in oil and wrapped in plastic.

I could have sworn Rockauto had the gasket sets for it, but they seem to be missing now.

Since there's no sign of any kind of RTV on the originals (midplate or bearing retainer), am I correct in assuming that none is needed when I locate a gasket set for it? Would re-using the originals be alright?

Just as an FYI, in case you didn't already know this... the AX-15 from a YJ is different from the AX-15 in a comanche or XJ. The output housing that the transfer case bolts to is different, clocking the transfer case up further than on an XJ/MJ. You'll probably find that you'll have to beat on the floor pan of the XJ to make the t-case fit after you install a YJ AX-15.

You can remedy this by swapping the output adapter off the back of the trans. It's kind of a pain, and involves taking the shifter apart and removing some bolts that hold the whole assembly in place. It's been a long time since I did it. It sounds like you already have the trans apart somewhat, so now would be the time to do it.

As far as gaskets go, I used RTV when I swapped the tail housing and it's still leak free years later.

So orange RTV, with no gasket, or with the gaskets?

Depending on what's wrong with his trans, I plan on fixing it. If it's what I think it is, it won't be too bad to repair.

I already know about the clocking difference, and it won't be an issue. The problem with hitting the floor shouldn't be an issue to begin with since he already has an AX-15 crossmember. Plus, I was planning on swapping the rear cases anyway.

The clocking difference is an issue using the proper ax15 crossmember and mount, so you will want to change the rear case.

I have a good 2wd one and need a4wd output shaft and a yj tail housing so I can replace the 260k mile one in my xj, and clock the 242 up to a reasonable hight
