But I did find Herbie,

Also found a scraper on his way to crush a J20. I did my duty and gave him a proper education on the value of these trucks. He's supposed to call me about the axles but he hasn't called. Maybe because he caught on to my subtle accusations of sacrilege that basically went something like "you're going to hell for this you &^@#%$". It was in terrible shape before he cut it up anyway, but practically rust free.

And....I picked up my third 1998 Grand 5.9 Limited. So I've got two now. Its got 177K on it and is the fastest of the three I've owned. The PO replaced the honey comb grill with a chrome 7 slot. That will get painted black if I can't find a 5.9 grill.

The new one has a Flowmaster Cat and muffler. Can't think of anything else, actually that shouldn't make that much difference since my current DD 5.9 has a Flowmaster muffler with a stock cat but also a K+N FIPK. Now the DD also burns a little oil. These heads do have a problem with cracking so it could be that or there's oil making it past the piston rings. Who knows? Only thing I haven't changed is the O2 sensors. It is also carrying about 200-300 lbs of extra stereo equipment, not sure, I didn't weigh all that junk.

Tough to determine the health or strength of a motor these days. It seems a well maintained high mileage engine always out performs the same engine with non-maintained and abused low mileage. My first one (white) with 233K miles was also faster than my current DD and got better mileage. I get 15 maybe 17 mpg if I'm lucky, the PO who had the new one for the last 150K said he routinely would get over 20 with it on the highway. They've both got a bit over 170K on them and neither throw any codes.

Yeah, I'd be interested in several parts when it comes that time, PM me when you start to tear her apart....An MJ with one of these engines would be "Hot"! They've got more timing and a different CPU then the regular Truck version of the 5.9. If I keep this one I think I'll go more of this route with it eventually....http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/ ... index.html

I'm building an '88MJ with the engine/trans/PCM out of a Niner. I also have the parts and plans to supercharge it and tune it with an SCT tuner. Should be a lot of fun once I'm all done with it...if I can actually keep the rear wheels from spinning, that is.

What makes the latest Niner faster than your others?

I picked up a Stone White Niner a couple weeks ago on the cheap and will eventually be parting it out. The grill won't be cheap, though ;)

Just remembered this,

I spoke with Dave at Hughes Engines about the difference in performance and mileage. He said there were several programs that dealerships installed in these that actually hurt power and MPGs for improved emissions. You'd think it wouldn't be such a big difference but it is. I may eventually buy a SCT tuner with custom programs from them when I get some extra dough.

You still got that grille?

Yea, the dealer had what was known as the "death flash" because people were complaining of having to put premium fuel in their $45K+ SUV with a 5.9L V8 engine. I've got the SCT handheld for my Niner with three "canned" tunes for 87, 91, and 93 octane. Currently on the 87 octane flash for cheap summer cruising.

Yep, still got the grille. It's stone white and in pretty nice shape. Has a small crack up on top where one of the mounting screws is, but it's not broken and could easily be repaired with epoxy...or just left as is and you be careful not to overtighten the screw like the PO did.
