runs great! - except......... sensor ? IAT ?

Recommended Posts

......when it doesn't run great, - which is sometimes, so i took it to a shop and they diagnosed it as an IAT sensor, but can't find one anywhere.( btw it's an 86 2.5 l 5spd 4x4). apparently it has to be from an 86. can anyone enlighten me on this? they said they had pinpointed it right to this sensor. as a side note (maybe) it has been experiencing run-on lately when i shut it off.

Intake Air Sensor. On the Renix 4 Cyl it should be located on the firewall side of the intake manifold in a threaded port. It looks similar to the CTS but stays dry since it only measures air charge. There's a resistance/temp chart for it but basically the resistance should be pretty close to the CTS from cold start through about the 1st 5 min of idle. After that intake air temp and coolant temp start going their separate ways.

...... is there some way to adapt one from a different year of 2.5? another thing is the idle keeps changing, -not drastically, but frequently.

I'm amazed by the power this little motor has when its running well, but when its not, if can hardly make it up a hill ----- and there's a lot of hills in my neighbourhood.

I was just looking on Rock Auto and they show the IAT for 88 2.5l, but not for 87? It is under emissions, they have a good photo of it. I changed mine and it made a big difference.

A bad O2 sensor can make the idle change up and down, along with a lot of other things in the fuel system.

It's a threaded sensor with 2 wires about 6" long and a connector, correct? If I remember my 2.5 correctly I think the sensor is identical to the renix 4.0 sensors. Is my description right? Can you post a pic of it?

If it's discontinued I'd say e-bay or a post to the want ads. A CTS might work since the resistance is the same. I might have a spare 2.5 IAT in my basement come to think of it...

yes, thank you. i bought one today that was for a newer 2.5 and it had no leads coming from it, but it looked like the right plug (it wasn't), so i took it back and ended up finding that style of plug on my parts xj (95). so i cut the plug off and wired into the leads on my truck, then simply installed the one from my parts truck and it seemed to work but i would have to give it a few days to be able to tell. i think i will go back and buy the one from the newer 2.5 again and now it will plug-in so i will be able to try it.

they also sold me an 02 sensor that doesnt have enough wires coming from it and i think i will pick-up the proper one of those while I'm there and give that a try too as i think I'm still getting idle speed changes.

the scope diagnosis only pointed to the ait sensor but it couldnt hurt to change 02 as well, I'm thinking.
